Joe Said:

How is nursing in NYC? Pay? Nurse to pt ratio?

We Answered:

I got 4 patients in the ICU in a city hospital!
$ 66k/year for public hospitals. Night shift: add another 5k.
Private hospitals pay more. I think at least 70k to start for a new grad. For each year experience you have in the nursing field, they pay you 1k more per year. Another 1.5k for a BSN.
Mt. Sinai Hospital is good. The overturn rate is very low. It is also a good hospital. The pay is better than the public hospitals. But you will need a BSN to apply for a position.

How do I get my wife committed ?

We Answered:

Sorry, I actually can relate, though it isn't my husband I am talking about. You did make those vows. You do need to be there. Perhaps you getting some therapy would help you deal with this horrible situation. I am not unsympathetic, but we can't just throw away the people we promised to love. Perhaps there is some help. she may need to be in live in care for awhile, but talk to a professional about you and your feelings first so you can make the best decisions for you and the kids. They should talk to someone also. Sorry, I know life is unfair and you are angry.

Is being a navy corpsman really worth it?

We Answered:

I was in the Navy for 5 years, and I was trained as an EMT while I was in. I have since "crossed into the Blue" (joined the Air Force). The Navy was a great time in my life and I grew up a lot. I, fortunately, got to see a lot of the world in my service. I lived in Italy for 4 years at NAS Sigonella and loved every day. The military in general is a great way to start your life/career and will give you some valuable training along the way. The HM (Hospital Corpsman) performs a wide range of jobs ranging from ER work to immunizations, ORs to pharmacy work.

To answer your questions:
1. Military = college benefits (GI Bill, Tuition Assistance, etc)
2. Similar to an EMT? Just like in a non-military hospital
3. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY
4. Does being a woman matter? Not in the least.
5. Will it give you a shot at being an RN? You will have a ton of experience.
6. See the world? You bet you will.

Seriously, the military is not for everyone, but it seems like you have your head on straight. If you want to be a Corpsman, dont let the recruiter talk you into anything else to ship out earlier. Stick with your plan and be a Corpsman. Good luck!

Career question??

We Answered:

if you are good at what you do regardless of career, you will make money. at what point in your career are you, do you have any work experience. i would suggest doing something you have a passion for and the money will follow... if you really want to make money and be consistently at 100k, try looking into pharmacy school; of course that is 4-years of really hard work, but once you graduate, you start off at 100k... you can work retail and that is "BUSY"...

from the sound of it you can also be a teacher; may not start off at 40k, but if you teach summers, and if you work a few years you will be up in the 40-50's... great career, you get christmas, summer, all the major holidays off; you can work with kids, have pretty nice work hours and it is a career for the divine.

other ideas may also be internet related; try looking up search engine optimization; a lot of companies are moving towards internent marketing etc.; you can get a degree in business, internet marketing etc., work some internships and get into a large corporation... it can easily start out at 40k, you will be working with people daily.. and if you are GOOD at what you do, you will be in the 50-60+ in no time...

good luck with your choices, it is not easy, but remember talent alone won't get you anywhere, it is the personality and the ability to work well with others that will make you soar.
