Field Of Nursing
Glen Said:
How do I "specialize" in the nursing field? We Answered:
All nursing specialties are basically obtained as "on the job training"; some offer certificates later on once you have worked in that field; but as of now, there are no specialty schools. You have 2 options: 1. find a hospital that offers a "new grad" training & orientation program to perinatal nursing. Often these are structures training programs of a few month (to 6 or so); you work along side a mentor & get more training. 2. Working in a general nurse floor position (usually med-surg) 1-2 years and then transferring into a L&D/perinatal position. It depends on what's available in your area as to which route you could chose. As to your last question; you could become a BSRN and eventually a nurse practitioner (Masters) or even a nurse-midwife, if you so chose. You will need nursing experience however before you can consider NP or similar. Goos luck.Cathy Said:
The most lucrative Nursing field to get into?We Answered:
CRNA or Anesthesia Nurse, they make six figures or very close to it. But bewarned it is a lot of responsibility. You literally have someones life in your hands. Research it carefully to be sure you can handle the responsibility of it. I am considering the field myself.Mattie Said:
Would you go into the nursing field for the money and because of the tough economy? We Answered:
I hope people don't choose nursing for that one reason alone. It takes the right kind of personality to fit the career. Not everyone is cut out for nursing. You need patience, a strong work ethic, empathy, the ability to be flexible and to be a problem solver, an effective communicator, to give care that is equal and non-judgmental, etc. I would not want a nurse caring for me who did not possess these qualities and was only there for the paycheck.I would like to believe that nursing schools are tough enough that people who really don't fit would drop out before even finishing.

Are wedding rings not supposed to be worn at work especially those in the nursing field.?We Answered:
My mother is a nurse and does not wear her wedding ring to work. It's isn't a rule, but she finds it really uncomfortable. She has to wash her hands all the time so it could slip off and it can poke or be uncomfortable for the patients she's helping. It doesn't say anything about my parents' marriage - they have been together for 32 years in February, and are very happy. It's just a practical consideration. They are both confident enough in their relationship that the symbol of the ring isn't necessary to them.
Besides, no one ever has to wear a wedding ring. Some people don't like jewelry, or find it uncomfortable, or just can't be bothered. It says absolutely nothing about their marriage - it's only an indication that they don't care for jewelry.

Can an employer discriminate against a bipolar person in the health field, such as nursing? We Answered:
yes, an employer can, because you may not be able to do the job, especially life of patient is at stakeTracey Said:
What education is required to have a specialty in the nursing field? We Answered:
Well, to be an RN that works in surgery, you simply need an ASN or a BSN. To be a "Clinical Nurse Specialist", you need a Masters in that area.I work in OB and we have "primary care nurses" (what used to be called "bedside nurses" and we all have either an Associate or a Bachelors in Nursing (ASN or BSN). Our unit also has a couple of Clinical Nurse Specialists, who after having years of Labor/Delivery RN experience, went a got Masters in this area. The "make rounds" on our patients, educate the staff, and help in implementing and writing policies and procedures specific to Maternal/Newborn nursing.
We also have a couple of Certified Nurse-Midwives that are RN's with Masters in Midwifery. They work with an OB/GYN practice and do deliveries in our unit.
For Anesthesia, we have many CRNA's on staff. They are RN's that have had several years of Critical Care nursing experience before getting their Masters-level education.
It all depends on what and how you want to specialize. After graduating with my ASN, I started working in OB and have been there since. I "specialized" by only working in Maternal/Newborn nursing.
