As far as the doctors looking down on you there are doctors who would but most of those who do look down at female nurses too. But don't worry this is more of a personality thing that you will find in some one no matter what career field you go into.

You attend college and earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor Degree. Either one will enable you to take the NCLEX, and after passing it, your state issues you a nursing license.

Nursing isn't a career that needs an "Ivy League" education. Just make sure the school you attend is accredited by the NLN or the AACN.

An ASN (Associates of Nursing) takes 2 years. A BSN takes 4 years. However, you can get your ASN and then do an online bridge program through a local college or university that offers it and it will take a year to a year and a half. So you can potentially get a 4 year BSN in 3 1/2 years.

A BSN starts out at roughly 50K a year starting out. Similar pay with and ASN, but a BSN can advance quicker over time because of their extra education.
