Some information about early nurses? We Answered:
The Roman writer Pliny writes of Olympias of Thebes who was a midwife or physician who specialized in the diseases of women. she is believed to have lived during the reign of Tiberius (14-37 AD). Olympias wrote a book of perscriptions which included chapers on disease of women with remedies to prevent miscarriages. Pliny cites several of her treatments for women's diseases in his Natural History.Elephantis or Philistra is mentioned by both Pliny and Sonarus as a medical authority. She wrote books on medicine and was a professor in the Roman medical schools. apparently she taught both men and women since Sonarus states she was so beautiful she was forced to lecture from behind a curtain so as not to distract her students.
Aspasia the Physician (c 100-200 AD) was a renowned Greco-Roman gynocologist and obstetrician. Aetius the 6th century court physician quotes her extensively in his four-volume medical encyclopedia the Tetrabiblion. Eleven chapters of his book are attributed to her.
In medieval times, sick people were often cared for in monastic infirmaries, and were cared for by monks or nuns. Much medical responsibility fell on the abbeses of convents and their delegated infirmarians in the medieval era,and particular skill in this area was usually emphasised. Hildegarde of Bingen served as an infirmarian before she became an Abbess, and her life claims tha she was renowned for her cures and her skill. Her two books dealing with natural history and human biology and illness were among the most advanced of her time.
The first woman to be officially identified as a doctor in northern Europe appears to be Helvidas, thus described when named as a benefactor of a church in northern France in 1136. Sibille Lissiardi of Paris was 'most learned in surgery' and cured Geoffrey la Chapelle,a household official of Philip Augustus, of haemorroids. 'Magistra Herssend physica' was married to the royal apothecary and herself attended Louis IX and went on his crusading expedition tothe Holy Land in 1248. At Acre in 1250, Louis granted her a lifetime pension of 12 pence a day in return for her services.
The situation in medieval England appears similar to that in France - few women doctors, but usually respected. These included Katherine, the surgeon of London, who was the daughter of a surgeon; Ann the Medica,on the staff of St Leonards Hospital in York, and Agnes in Huntingdonshire who was ackonwledged as a skillful practitoner. Around 1313 Christine the physician appears in the accounts of Jarrow Priory in 1313. After the beginning of the fifteenth century a physician named Joanna was paid by the infirmarian of Westminster Abbey for the medicine provided for two of the monks over a period of three years.
Midwives were important members of the local community during the medieval and early modern periods. Up until the late 17th century, childbirth was an exclusively female affair, the midwife delivered the baby, and was licensed by the local bishop to baptise a baby if she thought it was unlikely to live, so she had to be a woman of good character Louise Bourgeois Boursier (1563-1636) was the first midwife since ancient times to publish a work on obstetrics. She was also the first European midwife to gain an international reputation. Marguerite de Tertrede la Marche(1638-1706), who was head midwife of the Hotel Dieu in Paris, was a famous teacher of midwifery who in 1677 published a book of instructions for midwives. In 1671 Jane Sharp, an english midwife, published The Midwives Book, or the whole Art of Midwifery discovered: directing childbearing women how to behave themselves. The book was immensely popular, and several editions were published.
One aspect on Women in Medicine which is sometimes overlooked in modern times is the fact that in the pre-modern era the housewife was expected to be the family doctor. Part of the housewife's job was to grow herbs and make home remedies for illness. Household manuals contained long sections on how to make medicines, ointments etc to treat a very wide variety of illnesses. for example, in The English Housewife by Gervase Markham, the first chapter in the book is The Housewife as Surgeon, and it contains over 200 different recipes for a wide variety of ailments, everything from toothache to heart disease.
Women of aristocratic and gentry families often treated the local poor as well as the members of their own household. Lady Grace Mildmay (1552-1620) was an English lady who was an expert herbalist. She reportedly worked "virtually as a professional doctor", producing her medicines on a large scale for use outside her home.

What ar etwo very inmportant information about nurses in the civil war that everyone should know?We Answered:
I've included a link regarding early Illinois women which includes an interesting paper on medical care during the Civil War. Here's an important fact about nurses: a huge advance took place in the field of nursing, where respect for the role of women in medicine rose considerably among both doctors and patients. The second URL I've included is from Louisa May Alcott's "Hospital Sketches". You may remember her for her famous books, "Little Women", "Little Men", "Work", etc.
The final link is from Virginia Commonwealth University and has many internet links to civil war medicine. Take your choice of important information about nurses from those sources. I hope I've been of some help to you. Good luck.
