Is Nursing A Good Career

Mabel Said:

How do I know if nursing is a good career for me?

We Answered:

From the people I've talked to, they say that you will either love it or hate it - there's not a lot of in between. So you have to have a passion for it, or you will easily get burned out on the schooling and/or out in the field. You obviously need to have a compassion for people and a love for helping people. This is why nurses deal with blood, vomit, feces, urine, etc.- they know what they are doing is worth it to help the patient get better. Do you work well in a fast-paced, stressful, and always changing environment? Every day is different in a hospital.

I think the best way to know is ask yourself why you are motivated to become a nurse. If it's your passion for health care and helping people, you should be fine. But if it's something more superficial like money, I don't think that's enough for all you have to go through as a nurse. It's a tough field for sure, but also really rewarding.

Try to see if there is a way you can shadow a nurse at a local hospital for the day just to get a better idea of what their day is like.

Is Nursing a good career to get into?

I'd recommend taking a day and shadowing the nursing staff, or find someone who works in the nursing area and see if they would be willing to meet with you over lunchtime.

I used to be an HR manager in a nursing home. You need to love nursing to want to be in this career. If you are only going into it for job security, it is not the field for you.

You will be multi-tasking, because you need to ensure that everything is charted (documented) correctly., you will be responsible for administering doctor's orders including meds. You will be handling lots and lots of paperwork, as well as assessing patient's conditions on behalf of the doctor. You are the primary liaison between the doctor and the patient, which is why a good nurse often knows as much as a doctor.

Is nursing a good career field to go into?

We Answered:

Nursing is probably one of the most secure fields you can pursue. The population is aging which should increase the need for more medical personnel at all levels. A good nurse can usually find a good job with a decent income.

Is nursing a good career for mom's of young children?

We Answered:

They work 3-4 days a week, but sometimes 12 or more hours a day. It would be a good career choice because the job will be more and more in demand in the future, and you will save a bunch of money on health care. B)
