Licensed Practical Nurse Career

Gloria Said:

NEED HELP OF WHAT CAREER THIS IS?

We Answered:

It could be a CNA (Nurses Aide) or an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). Most likely its an RN (Registered Nurse).

Next time you are in the hospital, check the letters at the end of their name. This will indicate what training they have. Mostly RN's work in hospitals.

When you FIRST get to the hospital and have to go through TRIAGE, that nurse is always an RN. They are never anything less.

Good luck :)

Jamie Said:

become a teacher or a LPN? Which would be a better career?

We Answered:

I have a good suggestion!

How about you become an RN. it's a 4 year degree, which is in the middle of your two options. There are also a lot more options for employment. dont like working sifts?you can work at a doctors office and have a regular 9-5 work day. also, the nurses that work with my mom (UCSF) make $60/hour starting salary. thats pretty good.
plus, there's a huge shortage for them so that means more available jobs.

Nursing Career??????????

We Answered:

Nursing can be a very rewarding and very exciting career, but at the same time, it is a lot of work to get into the career, so you must have perseverance and dedication in order to complete the training. The RN program is a very intensive program that requires both theoretical and hands-on experience.

Before you can get into the actual nursing component of the training, you must complete several of pre-requisite courses such as anatomy and physiology, chemistry, math, biology, psychology and some other courses like this. Then after that, you will get accepted into the nursing program.

The nursing program as mentioned, is very intensive, so you need to have the dedication. What happens with the nursing courses, is you do a block of theoretical and practical information within the classroom setting, and then you will go and practice that information that you have armed yourself with in that block in a hospital rotation, where the teacher will observe as you practice your bedside manner, and the clinical skills that you have learned and practiced in the classroom setting. Once that block has been completed, then you will do another, and follow the same procedure, until you have completed the classroom/clinical experience.

After this, then you will have to do a prectorship at the end of all of your training, and this is where you're like a real nurse, and you will be under the direction of a nursing supervisor on the ward, where you will show all of the skills, and then after that length, you will be assessed by that supervisor, and then that sheet will be turned into your school, and then you will know whether you will be able to sit the board exam to become a Registered Nurse.

For the LPN (licensed practical nurse), you will have a fairly intensive training program too, but the intensity is a little bit less and the training is alittle bit less. You will still have about 2-3 blocks where you will have to do rotations, but the scope of training is a lot less. However, now-a-days some of the RN work is slipping to more the LPN now.

Once you have done either of the above training, you will need to have a successful physical, tb test, and you will also need to have a clear chest x-ray as well as all up to date immunizations. Not to also add, that you will need to have a clean criminal record check as well.

Below are some of the duties that you will be responsible for.

1) Triaging (depending on level, this primarily RN)
2) Dispensing Medications (RN only)
3) Establishing catheters, IV's and other devices (RN only)
4) Transferring patients
5) Adding IVs once an established route has been made
6) Rolling patients
7) Feeding, dress and helping patients with personal hygiene
8) Following doctor's orders
9) Coordinating tests
10) Vitals

Those are some of the general duties. The other duties will depend on which department or industry within nursing you choose.
