Male Nurse Career
Eleanor Said:
To be a male nurse is a good career or not. Now, i am a massage therapist. I graduated MBA 7 years ago but nev?We Answered:
I am a nursing student.Male nurses have just as many opportunities as female nurses.
Its always important to have a balance of men and women in healthcare.
In my experience, male nurses are treated really well and very appreciated.
Don Said:
How much does a male nurse make per hour to begin with, and how long does it take to study that career? We Answered:
the amount a nurse makes is really based on the region in which that individual works and the facility in which they are working for. Hospitals tend to pay more than say a home for senior citizens. The amount of time it takes to become a nurse is really based on the level of nursing one wants to become. you can be a LVN or RN.. but if you are just starting out becoming a cna is a good way to get some hands on experience and knowledge.

Should I join the Navy or Air Force to start a career as a male nurse???We Answered:
I'd suggest talking to both a Navy and an Air Force recruiter to see what programs are available. While they probably can't make any guarantees, they should be able to explain what your options are.Another thing to consider: If you go into the service first and get your training there, you'll be serving as an enlisted man. If you go to college first, you'll be able to enter the service as an officer.

Male Nurse?We Answered:
Nursing actually originated as a function performed by males, and was not called nursing until women began to assume the duties. Even in the US during the CIvil War, men who were unable to fight, often were used as nurses by the Union Army. An example was Walt Whitman (famous poet). The chances of having an all male team of nurses is more than five times as likely to occur in the Military than in the civilian healthcare world. One of the little known facts of military nursing is the high percentage of men in all three services. In the Army 35.5% of its 3,381 nurses are men; in the Air Force, 30% of 3,790 nurses are men; and in the Navy, 36% of the 3,125 nurses are men. One must remember that in the nursing profession that only 7% is male. In the Army, 67% of CRNAs are men, 40% of the OR nurses are men, 34% of ED nurses are men, 29% of critical care nurses are men and 39% of medical/surgical nurses are men.
In a recent survey of 2 major university BSN programs they were found to have 24% and 29% male students.
When I went to my BSN program 1% of all RNs in the US were male, in my program there were 6 male students in a class of 225 students. Interestingly, though we started with 225 students (6 male) we finished with 107 graduates (6 male). Of the 107 graduates from my class, 97 passed the RN board exams (including all 6 males). This was at a time when it was considered strange for males to go to an RN program, and my school, did not have a male uniform. That school is now 25% male and their graduate school runs 33% male.
I have gone from making less than $6 per hour as a new RN graduate to charging $125 per hour, and working part time. I think it can be a very good career if you work at it.

Questions about Male nurse career? We Answered:
My husband is 57 and serves as a CNA/HHA It is true that some of the older ladies won't allow him to assist them with certain bathing and toilet duties. However on the other hand some gentlemen prefer a male nurse and remember the baby boomers are getting older and so I believe things will continue to get easier for male nurses. And not to be sexist at all because there are a lot of physically strong female nurses but as a man my husband has been able to lift and take care of just about any weak patient out there without getting injured, thank God.
