Starting a new career at 40! Nursing? We Answered:
My mum became a nurse at 34 she is 42 now. she loves it. she is also a mentor.basically if you are studying at university and depending on where you go to university you first few weeks are taken up with assignments etc. you are then taken through basic nurse training steps at the university. you know like checking passage ways and things like that. i believe you even learn how to give cpr and injections.
you will be given inoculations whilst you are working accademicly (sorry im not a good speller) and getting fitted for nursing uniform. then you get the oppourtunity to get some real hands on experience.
under the supervision of a mentor you will learn all the major skills that you need in nursing at a real hospital. you will remain with that hospital for several weeks before being transferred to another one. the university will do this so you have had experience in most things.
bear in mind that you will have to do this whilst doing all you academic work at the same time and your hours at the hospital will change all the time.
hope this helps
good luck

i am a 47 yr. old woman trying to decide on a new career - between physical therapy, nursing, teaching or?We Answered:
As a 40 year old PT, it is a great profession but depending on your background it is approx 3 years beyond a BS degree with the proper pre reqs. Nursing on the other hand is a 2 year degree. PTA is a 2 year degree but do not make as much as an RN.Anything in the medical field is a great choice at the moment.
I think that the nurse who posted about hard on the body does not know what she is talking about. Most facilities near where I live have no lift policies and use mechanical lifts because of the back injuries and workers comp of the past.
Nurses work in a variety of places such as doctors offices, schools, nursing homes, variety of floors in a hospital, rehab facilities, research facilities, home care. Not all of the positions are as physically demanding.
