Rodney Said:

How should I go about looking for an out-of-state nursing job as a new graduate?

We Answered:

schools.medianewsonline.com - I found such internship info here. It has lots of internships, job openings and scolarships for college students.

Roberto Said:

What are the benefits of using a recruiter or staffing agency as a new nurse?

We Answered:

A recruiter (head hunter), are usually for the higher paying jobs.
I would love to start out working for a temp agency that specializes in nursing.
That way, you can get experience, experience, experience.
You may bouce from job to job, one month here, 6 months there.
But after 5 or so years, you will become valuable to any company since you will have such varied experiences.
The down side, you can be out of work for 2 weeks at a time.
It is important that if you are the pay check to paycheck type person you stay away from temp work.

Nursing Graduate Jobs?

We Answered:

The reality is even when the market was better for nurses most places didn't like to place nurses without experience in such high-risk units. As a new graduate in today's economy you don't get to be picky. You have to be happy to get your foot in the door then hopefully work your way into your unit of choice. Some more rural hospitals are less competitive, though they tend to pay less they may be able to offer you an opportunity to gain experience and even a better chance to work in L&D or the nursery. The down side is that you would likely have to commute or move which you say you don't want to do. Check with local hospitals and see if they have a new graduate program. A lot of hospitals have done away with these or at least scaled them back, and they have become very competitive. Pediatric home health is another option at least to start; that was my first job I got as a new graduate.

Guess I misunderstood, definitely check more rural locations and teaching hospitals with new grad training programs. Also the midwest has overall better unemployment numbers and perhaps is somewhat less competitive. If you are lucky enough to live in a compact state, once you get your license you will be able to look in a large number of other states and apply for jobs without even having to hassle with getting a license by endorsement, in a state you haven't gotten a job in yet in order to apply.
I once talked to a nursing recruiter for a local hospital and unfortunately she was telling me that they regularly advertise jobs that may not even exist just to drum up a larger applicant pool. So it's tough out there, but just stay positive and be persistent.

Hazel Said:

Will the nursing field become saturated with new graduate nurses in a few years? Iam going to go into nursing?

We Answered:

It's different in all areas of the country. Some places are experiencing layoffs and others are still in a big shortage.

Generally speaking nursing is still a very stable career choice. There WILL be an increase to the shortage as the older nurses retire (fewer new nurses are coming into the profession than there are old ones retiring and leaving the profession). You also have to consider our nation's population and the state of health. . . with an increasing Baby Boomer population comes an increased burden on the healthcare system. A nation of obsese people brings an increase in heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions.

I would say stick with it. People that are having trouble finding jobs are probably too picky and holding out for their ideal job. You might have to work for awhile in a nursing home or doing home health or something that wasn't your first choice, just to get some experience to get started. The economy will improve (although it might get worse before it gets better), and you WILL have a job.
