Nursery Nurse Career

Nursery Nurse?We Answered:
I am a postpartum nurse, sometimes I work in the nursery. I assume you mean a well baby nursery, the NICU (neonatal ICU) is an entirely different specialty for premature and sick babies. Nursery nurses for well babies are not "specialty" nurses, sometimes specialty pay is given to L&D, adult ICU, ER & NICU.Some hospitals no longer have well baby nurseries as the trend is for "rooming in". Other hospitals have well baby nurseries where the babies stay at night for phototherapy, for a brief observation, for first assessment, bath and 2 hr transition period after the c-section or simply if the moms are tired and want to sleep.
In our hospital, the nursery nurse checks the meds in the crash cart and keeps the nursery clean, she babysits all babies in the nursery, does baby vitals every 4-8 hrs depending on how new they are, one nurse can take care of eight infants at a time. She also cares for well infants that need phototherapy for jaundice.
Also, at our hospital the well baby nurse does all the admissions for the c-sections, the ALS nurse brings them straight from the OR all bloody and goopy, we weigh them, do the first assessment and put them in a warmer, when they are stable and warm, they get their first bath, and if still doing fine they go out to see mom.
I have been at this particular job for two years.

What all does a Newborn Nursery Nurse do?We Answered:
Nursing is either a 2 year degree or 4 year degree for entry level. You can have either and still work in the nursery. Your base pay is usually between 21 and 23 dollars an hour. The shifts are generally 12 hour shifts- either 7 am-7 pm or 7pm or 7 am. Some hospitals do have 8 hour shifts. They take care of the babies and they also can help with breastfeeding and helping mom and dad learn about how to care for their babies. I don't think your age has much to do with whether you will be a good nurse or not. I always recommend following someone in the speciality you are interested in. Nursing is a great field and you can find lots of different spots in pediatrics if you don't like the newborns. Nurses training does mean that you have to do clinicals in ALL different types of settings like geriatrics and mental health so once you get through that, you'll have a great idea of a good fit for you.

Are you a nurse in the nursery area? If yes please click.?We Answered:
my mom is a nurse and she works in this really good hospital called LIJ. she works in the mother and baby floor where the mother and baby are after the mother conceives. my mom had to study for like 6 or 8 years or so to become the nurse. the pay is good. my mom gets around 70,000 or 80,000 and she really likes being a nurse in general because you are helping people. and there is always a shortage of nurses in america. the first few months will be tiring though but its worth it for sureMatthew Said:
What does a newborn nursery nurse do?We Answered:
I don't think that's really a specialty anymore. You would be an RN and maybe specialize in newborn care, but ideally newborns should not be in a nursery, they should be with the mother. So if you became a registered nurse you could maybe work on the maternity floor in newborn care which would most likely involve both caring for babies in the nursery, if the hospital has one, and most often visiting rooms to check on the babies and mothers.Depending on where you go to school, you would either do 2 years to get your prerequisites at a community college or university and then go to nursing school for 2 years to get your bachelor's degree in nursing. If you go to a university with a nursing program you may be able to take some nursing classes your freshman and sophomore years depending on how their program is structured, but most likely your nursing classes and practice labs etc. will all be your 3rd and 4th years and you'll have to apply for acceptance into the nursing program sometime during your sophomore year.
It's really important to get good grades your freshman year since those are the grades they will be basing your acceptance on. You can't party and not study and still get into nursing school, it's extremely competitive because they don't have enough teachers, therefore they can't take as many students as they'd like.
One of the best things you can do is to get your NAC which you can do in high school. It's basically getting certified to work in a nursing home or hospital as a nursing assistant, and I think you just have to be 16. I have a few friends who did that during the summer in high school and went on to get nursing degrees.
Also please call the nursing programs in your area and ask them what they look for! Ask to talk to someone in admissions, tell them you are considering the nursing field and would like to know what they look for when they interview potential students. Nobody better to hear it from than the people who actually make the decisions.

which would be a better job nursery nurse or midwife? We Answered:
Are you in the US or elsewhere? If you're in the US, when you go to nursing school you don't have to make any huge decisions like that right away. Nursing programs teach you to care for all patient populations from newborn to geriatric. You earn your RN license and can work in a hospital in any specialty area. During nursing school you might find your preference lies in one area. Or not. Get a job in one of those areas (either maternal-newborn or labor & delivery) and see if you like it. If not, switch. Don't be afraid to job-hop. If you decide you want to be a Certified Nurse Midwife, you can't do it right away, all at once anyway, you'll need work experience in L&D before you can apply to a grad school midwifery program.
If you're an RN in the US you will earn enough money even as a "regular" staff nurse. I am the sole wage earner for my family, have a mortgage and children and everything and we don't live an extravagant life, but we live comfortably.
Good luck.
