Nursing As A Career Choice

Juan Said:

What would a nursing career in geriatrics entail?

We Answered:

I was a nurse for 30 years. Nursing school was challenging, definitely not easy. The pay is pretty decent and I always knew I could get work where ever I wanted to live. I recommend that you get a taste of what it would be like by working as a volunteer or nursing assistant on a geriatric unit. That would be the best way to find out if it's your cup of tea. Nursing is a very demanding career physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. I would not recommend it nor would I ever discourage anyone from pursuing it. Day to day in a geriatric setting you'd be giving medications, dressing wounds, observing, writing in the medical records, conferring with other members of the health care team, making sure doctors orders are carried out, tests get done, educating the patients and their families. Those are the main things that come to mind. Try it. See if you like it. Even if you don't and decide to do something else, the experience will be very valuable. That I can guarantee.

Clyde Said:

Should I go into Nursing as a career?

We Answered:

There is a high demand for nurses right now. My aunt is a nurse, and I've talked with her quite a bit about what the job entails. There are long hours, and my aunt has admitted that she spends a lot of her time at work. However, she still has time for her kids. She has a better relationship with her kids then I do with my mom, and my mom hasn't worked near the amount of hours that she has. She told me that as soon as she got off work she'd feel bad if she wasn't spending time with her kids, so she'd go home and they'd do things together. I suppose what I'm trying to say is even though nurses do work long hours there's still time left for you to spend with family and friends.

I would imagine that working as a nurse or doctor would be an extremely rewarding career, and that was what was most appealing to me. Trying your best to help people and save their lives seems like a very noble thing to be a part of. My aunt works in neonatal care and she has said that she's seen some bad things. One story stands out, but I won't type it up here.

I can't tell you whether you should go into nursing or a different field. I'm not even sure what alternative careers I could recommend because I don't know what type of things you're interested in. The best advice I can give you would be to consider what you're interested in, how important it is to you to have a career doing something you're interested in, how much time you'd like to spend working and with family/friends, how much it matters to you to have a rewarding career, whether you could handle seeing some of the bad things that are bound to happen from time to time in neonatal care, etc. I'm not in a position to say what type of career would be a good fit for you. Nurses are highly demanded right now, but if you feel like it'd be too big of a risk to go into nursing because you may hate it, or if you feel like you'd have to sacrifice too much in order to be a nurse, then try to think about other things you're interested in and the careers that compliment those things. Next, try to research the careers to see if you'd think they'd be a better fit for you.

If you'd like to talk more feel free to email me. Good luck and I wish you the best.

Barbara Said:

which is a Better career choice: business or nursing?

We Answered:

Nursing offers a lot of flexibility -- you can work part-time, evenings or weekends, which makes it ideal for a parent who has a partner who can care for the kids while they work. I know a critical care nurse who makes a full salary and only works 3 days a week (but it includes weekends). His wife, also a nurse, works during the week while their kids are in school. A nurse anesthetist can make $145,000 a year:

But you kind of have to work to your strengths. If you can handle the science needed to become a nurse, it can be a good career. If your strengths are in words, meeting people, sales, etc., then you might be better off in business.

what is a better career choice, Nursing-CNA/LPN/RN or Teaching im interested in Kindergarten through3rd grade?

We Answered:

I think you should talk with a career counselor at a community college in your area. They are usually willing to talk with anyone, even someone who is not a student there. He/she will help you explore your interests and abilities and find a career that will suit you.

Todd Said:

please help me . is about my career choice as bein a nurse?

We Answered:

Nursing is the better choice. Do not think about the manly issue there. Nurses can work anywhere in the world unlike engineers. There are also more employment opportunities. I did my G.C.E O levels too. I did that in Nigeria. I live in New York bro and trust me Nursing is a million times better!
