Nursing As Career

Kelly Said:

What Can You Tell Me About Nursing As A Career?

We Answered:

it depends what department you work in at a hospital but you are basically the doctors and patients right hand doing various things like giving medication, feeding, communicating with the doctor and prepping the patient for various procedures. they make between 55 to 84k per year. I would also check out the Nursing page at PureMedicalJobs.com

Nursing as a Career - the highs and lows?

We Answered:

Well, most nurses are women & most women eventually become mothers, so I think it safe to say that it is possible to combine nursing & motherhood. There are lots of ways that it can be done. Some folks like to work nights & sleep while their kids are at school, but that would never have worked for me. Some nurses work 3 12 hour shifts & have 4 days off each week. My 2 kids are now grown, but I worked throughout their childhood.

High: helping a man heal a leg wound that he had had for 32 years. Low: working w/ a 14 year old girl who died of ovarian cancer.

Nursing is hard work, but it is very gratifying work. Maybe if you are not sure about nursing, you might want to consider getting certified as a nursing assistant. It doesn't take all that long to do so & it would give you an idea of what it is like to work in the field.

Benjamin Said:

should i take nursing as my career as decided by my dad?

We Answered:

Don't just let your dad decide your career for you. If you do that, you may hate it, struggle and feel miserable. Try talking to people who are nurses about thier careers and see if you can picture yourself doing what they talk about. Be sure to ask not only about the parts they enjoy, but also the stuff they don't enjoy so much. Consider being a volunteer at a hospital. That will give you some good experience at if you want a job in medicine and will look good on a resume. Try out a variety of introductory classes at college if you are not sure what you want to do. Who knows, you may discover a real passion for something else.
