Nursing??? Career Paths?

We Answered:

First, there is no need to go to an EMT course for an RN to work in the emergency department. The duties of an RN are much different than those of an EMT. If you chose to be an EMT, that is fine, but it is unnecessary.

You can go to an associate degree or a BSN program. Either one produces qualified nurses. You are able to make more career choices with the BSN, and some hospital ask that you work for a while before they will pay for your tuition reimbursement for the BSN.

BSN graduates also statistically have higher pass rates on the NCLEX-RN board examinations.

Once you are an RN, you can work as a traditional medical surgical nurse, work in long term care, or pediatrics. You can work ER, or often with some experience, move into the ICU/CCU or nursery/NICU.

Some nurses receive additional education and become perioperative nurses.

There are also many non hospital jobs in clinics schools, research, insurance and other areas.

With additional education you can work as a legal consultant, computer informatics, Nurse Practitioner, midwife, CNS, or CRNA. Many RNs become educators for patients or other nurses.

A significant career path is into nursing and hospital administration.

There are many other choices, as the choices are virtually unlimited.
