How to get in to nursing (UK)?We Answered:
At the moment there is the choice of diploma or degree training for nursing. Both diploma & degree are university based, for 3 years with 50% of the course academic theory & 50% practical out on placement in hospitals, clinics etc. Midwifery is degree only, again that's for 3 years. For the diploma nursing most uni's ask for 5 GCSE's at C grade or above & Maths & English must be in those 5. Some also require you to have Science amongst the 5 too.
For the degree (nursing & midwifery) you'll need the GCSE's plus 2-3 A-levels.
If you haven't got the full 5 GCSE's then you can go to college for a year to do an Access course. This is A-level equivalent & you can apply for the diploma or degree. You'll need a science based Access but some colleges run specific Access to Nursing courses. http://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/ Many Access students have part-time jobs so you need not give up work entirely for this.
One thing to remember about the diploma is that it is currently being phased out & will no longer be offered after 2013. Some uni's have stopped offering it already & many won't be offering it after this Septembers intake. However some will be offering it so don't abandon your dream if you really feel the degree is not for you. http://search.ucas.com/cgi-bin/hsrun/sea…
You might find the forum in this site useful. http://www.studentnurse.org.uk/ This is a good site for aspiring midwives. http://www.studentmidwife.net/

Any career-enhancing on-line UK nursing courses?We Answered:
I'm not sure, you could try looking on the sites for nursing magazines e.g. nursing times. If not, you could look at the higher grade info on nhscareers.co.uk and see what courses you need to advance, it will probably give information of where they are run.Good luck!
