Nursing Careers Options

Felicia Said:

Double major bio and nursing, is it worth it?

We Answered:

,The 2 majors are totally compatible, as anesthesia is all about drug reactions to the physiology of human biology. Also, this would be an excellent background for a future in drug research and development or any medical research. Go for it! There are nothing but opportunities and no limits to how far you could go in either field with majors in both.

Military wife career? Is nursing best? Other options?

We Answered:

I answered your other question- I chose nursing. However, if you don't have any college under your belt you might want to try the nursing ladder if you move frequently. In my case, we're only at a station for 24 months before moving. Most RN programs are 2-6 years (depending on whether you're doing an ADN or BSN). By following the nursing ladder you earn a CNA (certified nursing assistant) first then the LPN and then the associates RN. If you want, you can earn a BSN online. You can break your education up. Yes, it might take longer- but it gives you flexibility.

Also, depending on your location there are some associates RN programs that can be completed in 15-24 months- these typically are pretty expensive and fast paced with a high turn over rate. If you're determined you can do it though.

Military wives can do an array of things. You may want to do some research on accountants as well.

Nursing/Psychology: Double degree course. What career options will i have after this course?

We Answered:

G'day,

What I can think of is if you are a HR manager in a Nurse employment agency, where you can employ the right nurse to a suitable patient based on the nurse's psychological profile.

However, rather than thinking of a single career, why don't think of the possible opportunities that you can have once you have graduated (with good results of course). Your choice will be much more than the graduates with single degree. You can choose your first job in one of those areas.

Hope this helps. Good luck for your study.

Military Nursing options?

We Answered:

If you are talking about the US Military, then know that you must go to civilian Nursing school at a university and graduate with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. Then you pass your Nursing Licensure exam. AFter you graduate with your degree and have your nursing license, then you are eligible to apply for a commission to be a Nurse in the military. You would have to go to civilian nursing school because none of the branches educate or train you to be a nurse.

The Army and other branches have an ROTC scholarship program that will help pay the costs of Nursing school. If you aren't able to get an ROTC scholarship, then know that the Army has what is called Health Professional Student Loan Repayment...this benefit will pay for up to $50,000 in federal student loans if you need to take out loans to pay for Nursing school. The other branches may have some loan assistance programs, so best to check with them.

Or you can enlist in the Army for one of the enlisted health care jobs. The one people hear of most are medics (the actual term is Health Care Specialist), but to get that job you have to score very well on the ASVAB. Talk to an Army recruiter for the specifics. I'm not as familiar with the other branches' health care jobs for enlisted folks, so check with recruiters to see what's available. After your enlistment, then you can use your education benefits (GI Bill) to help pay for Nursing School. You have options.

Are there nursing careers available on cruise ships?

We Answered:

Many big cities have information sessions to recruit employees to work for them. In order to apply you would have to attend one of these sessions. Basically a simple google search to any well known cruise line will have a link to tell you how to apply (don't fall for any of the internet websites that claim to tell you secrets of how to get a job on a cruise ship - the ONLY way is to go to one of those sessions)

There are pros and cons to working on a cruise ship like with any job.

You will be responsible for the health of both staff and passengers. You are also responsible for all emergency drills, occupational health (food inspection, safety inspections etc) in addition to general medical care (sea sickness, food poisoning, and Norwalk are your most common, as well as heart attacks and strokes. Sadly, people passing away on a cruise ship is more common than you think - Alaska and Panama Canal cruises have a high death rate due to elderly population)
As stated by another poster, you are on call generally 24/7 for a minimum of 3 months. Also there is a very small medical staff - usually 1 dr and 1 nurse (but this varies according to size of ship and you do have satellite resources and air ambulance access), but be prepared for a lot of responsibility and very few breaks

Generally you do not get much time off the ship when you are docked - this time is usually spent caring for staff and going through emergency drills.

Also note, you generally require at least 2 years acute experience, and there's

Food is free (although you generally have to eat at off peak times - staff cannot be seen eating at the same time as guests) You have free access to the gym, again, off peak hours. You also get free accommodations. Accommodations are teeny tiny, shared, and at water level or below (windowless). One perk is that for approx $20/person you can have guests stay with you in your accommodations (which is a perk for them)

Pay isn't the greatest (sorry not figures for you atm) but even though it isn't that great, you can save quickly, as there isn't a lot you can spend money on (you get discounts in all the shops, but the novelty wears off quick).

If you get motion sickness this is NOT the job for you!!

Overall, if you are interested keep looking into it - if it is not for you, you can leave once your have completed your first contract.

Discuss It!
