I'm speaking as someone who works in the field. I can honestly say it really depends on what area you're looking in. The radiation therapy market got FLOODED recently. In certain areas it is almost impossible to find a job. I live near Toledo, OH, and in this area, a lot of people who have graduated have had to take contingent jobs - working part time on an as needed basis - for years before finding a permanent job. There are a lot of hospitals who recently have had hiring freezes due to loss of revenue because of the economy. IF you have a specific area of the country where you want to live, job prospects are probably not so good. If you're willing to move, you will most certainly find a job somewhere - just maybe not in your ideal location. After you gain experience however, you can probably move to an area you want to live in.

I'm not saying this to deter you from doing this. Radiation therapy is a very rewarding awesome field to get into. The economy should pick up over the next couple years. There will always be a need for therapists. The market right now is flooded though - so getting a job isn't as easy as it once was. It is not impossible though. And once you're in the field, it's amazing. The pay is great too. Personally, I would rather be a therapist than a nurse. In radiation therapy, you see your patients every day for weeks - you get to know them - you get that one on one personal experience. It's so rewarding. The hours are great - mostly no weekends or evenings or nights (except for the rare emergency) and the people who work in this field are generally happy and fun to work with.

It really depends on what you want to do. My advice? Call up some hospitals. Ask for the department manager. Speak with him or her. Ask them what they think about the opportunities. You can also email them. Most people are really willing to offer advice. They would know best what the job opportunites are in the area, and if they'll be looking to hire anyone over the next few years. If it's what you want to do though, do it. There will be jobs. It might just be a little difficult at first.

If I were you, I'd go directly for my RN and not get the LPN first (no need to do that if RN is what you are interested in).

Entry level jobs as a RN are pretty much the same whether you graduate with an Assoc. Degree, Diploma, or a Bachelor's Degree. The difference is the opportunities that are open to you later.

The Associates Degree is a good move to get your RN licensure. From there you can easily go onto get your Bachelor's if you find out you need / want it. It is much cheaper as you say.

Have you looked into moving to Estes Park; they have a medical center there. Lots of history and one of the most famous historical buildings in Colorado; The Stanley Hotel. Hardly, if any gang violence. Beautiful view of the mountains, RMNP is in your backyard. Trust me, you would love it there.

Lol, Top Gun, ALL healthcare clinics and hospitals are "free" in Canada. It doesn't matter who you are. ;)

I would contact local public health and women's health clinics. Many of them offer programs for the disadvantaged and high risk, such as STI screening, syringe exchanges, withdrawal help, mental health referrals, and nutrition counselling/food bank contacts. You may also want to contact the Salvation Army and other local charities directly to see if they have any positions. I know that Vancouver has the position you are describing. You mainly work with the drug addicts and mentally ill on the East Side.
