What kind(s) of nursing jobs can a newly licensed LVN be hired to?

We Answered:

Often times home health agencies will hire new graduates, that is where I got my first LPN job (I worked there as a CNA while in school), I was doing mostly pediatric patients. Within a few months of getting my license while doing home health, I was looking for a full time position with benefits, I was hired in a correctional facility. As most people don't think of it as a desirable environment in which to work, they pay well and sometime hire less experienced nurses. I had a friend who was hired right away at an assisted living and another who was hired at a hospital affiliated outpatient clinic (she was a PCT at the hospital while in school). I have also seen a rehab hospital in my area hire LPNs with six months or less of experience. Though thought of as a dreaded position if you get into a good facility, they are not all bad. You have to keep an open mind about jobs and know that your dream job may not the first one that you get.

Jill Said:

Are there jobs in nursing homes that do not require a nursing degree?

We Answered:

Definitely! In fact I'm guessing that most of the staff in nursing homes consists of nurse aides. I am one myself but I work in assisted living.

To work in a nursing home (also called skilled care) you have to be a Certified Nursing Assistant. Do some research and find out where in your area there are classes available for this. After completing class work, you will probably have a "practical" experience which means clincial training in a nursing facility. After doing this, you take a state test to becoming certified. Good luck!
