Nursing Jobs In Hawaii
Darlene Said:
Where would be a good site to find a summer job in Hawaii? We Answered:
There's that site that I keep seeing on commercials, hawaiijobsondemand or something like that. But I think the best chance of getting a summer job would be working with local businesses.Mabel Said:
Where is a reasonably affordable and safe place to rent an apartment in Hawaii? We Answered:
Living in Hawaii is horribly expensive.Just a single room will set you back about $700, and on top of that you have to add utilities which are far higher than in the mainland. ( Think about $100 for electricity a month, for one room ).
Can you also afford the higher prices of groceries, and the fact that EVERYTHING is taxed at 4% - even services such as haircuts, car repair?
And a lot of people from the mainland cannot stand the constant high humidity. Be sure that you can take it.
Finally, the employment situation in Hawaii is no better than the mainland. The HealthCare options are the best.

Will Hawaiian's hate me for taking a job there? We Answered:
No. For the most part, that's not true. We are in need of nurses here in HI and if there aren't enough qualified people here to fill the jobs, there is no reason to deny them to people from other states. There are racists here in Hawaii just like there are everywhere else in the world. I am white and have lived in Hawaii for almost six years total (two different islands). I have occasionally gotten stink-eye from people, but it doesn't happen often and no one has ever harassed me. Funny -- I DO get stink-eye from local women sometimes when I am out with my boyfriend who is Chinese-Hawaiian. ;)
It's more about your attitude than anything. If you walk into work on your first day talking about how great things were in (insert hometown here) and how wonderful the facilities at (the hospital where you trained) are, people probably won't think much of you. Don't complain about Hawaii -- politics, traffic, food, people, etc. -- until you've built up some friendships and people respect your opinions. Otherwise you'll just come off as an elitist who thinks that Hawaii is trashy or somehow not as good as the mainland. Be respectful of the culture and the people and be friendly. A little good attitude goes a long way but a little bad attitude goes even l o n g e r. I'm not saying you have to monitor everything that comes out of your mouth, but moving to Hawaii isn't like moving from one mainland state to another. Hawaii was a kingdom prior to becoming a state and most of the locals are very proud of that. Their heritage, customs, and culture are deeply cherished and any disrespect (or even PERCEIVED disrespect) can cause you problems.
Good luck! Hawaii is awesome. I love living here!

Are there many nursing jobs available in Hawaii, if so where would be the best place to look?We Answered:
From everything I've read and heard, the whole country is short of qualified nurses. It's reasonable to assume there is a nursing shortage in Hawaii also, though it's probably not as bad as some rural place in Mississippi, for example. There are lots of websites that list jobs in many career fields and a number of specialized ones for medical fields (you'll find a large % of the postings on those are for nurses). If you're not familiar with them, start with Careerbuilder.com, Monster.com and Indeed.com.
You can also pick a city or island in Hawaii where you think you'd like to live and look on the web for hospitals there, and then look up the hospital on the web and proceed from there. If you know how to navigate the web there are endless possibilities!
