That is a bit strange. Most hospitals / nursing homes cover their employees with a policy.

Lisa Said:

What jobs are needed/demanded in New York City right now?

We Answered:

Nurses are definitely in need everywhere and I hear that in NYC the starting pay is at the high end compared to other states. It's more competitive in journalism. I think you should consider what it is that you can actually enjoy enough to do it for the next,... however many years,.... you don't want to get stuck in a career you don't enjoy. So I say, if you're good at writing then by all means pursue it. I hope I help in some way, pursue whatever it is that you're passionate about. You may end up doing it for the rest of your life. You could always get a job in the medical field (medical assistant, cna, rn, ekg, ect) and try to go to school for journalism. There are many possibilities sweety explore your options!

Ross Said:

Im moving to New York City and what is some basic facts about the city?

We Answered:

I'll try to answer these one at a time:

1) Brooklyn is BIG. The rent is different in different neighborhoods. Brooklyn is NOT a neighborhood, but a borough. It is the size of a large city. (Bigger than San Francisco, bigger than Boston, bigger than Washington, D.C.) You will find the rent is dramatically different in different parts of Brooklyn.

2) Nursing is one of the professions where there is some need. So you may find it easier to get a job in that field. It might depend on what kind of nursing license you have, of course. And, while there are jobs, the salary might not be enough to off set the cost of higher rent.

3) As to the expense of living here, it may depend on where you are moving from. If you are coming from certain parts of California, for example, it might not seem more expensive than what you are used to. If you are coming from the Mid-West, it will seem a lot more expensive. But yes, this is an expensive place to live!

4) No, of course it's not always rush hour on the subway! Rush hour is rush hour. It's much less busy at other times of day. Of course, it's always busy. But rush hour is really unpleasant, and at other times of day, you'll most likely find a seat at least. Or, failing that, you won't be smushed up against everyone else at other times of day!!!

5) No, Central Park is not dangerous! Now, I wouldn't go strolling around at night, just because it's isolated, and I always believe that you are safer around other people. This is true anywhere, not just in NYC! However there are lots of nice things to do at night in Central Park in the summertime. Don't avoid those just because it's nighttime! Lots and lots of other people will be there for those sorts of things. Just good street smarts tells you to always stay with other people. Don't go wandering off to a secluded place.

6) NYC is indeed an amazing place to live, in so many ways. But it's not for everyone. Some people love it, and can't live anywhere else. Count me in that group. I moved away when my husband got a job out of state, and I was so homesick for NYC that I had to come back. But some people just never get the rhythym of living here. For them, it's not worth it. I don't understand it myself, but I have met enough people like this to know that it's true. The only way to know for yourself which group you fall into is to come here and see.

I love it here, and I hope you feel the same. Good luck!

Jobs in New York City?

We Answered:

I would look for jobs through a Employment Agency. Placing it on sites like Monster with your info public will let you get phishing emails.

If you do decide to use sites like Monster, always check on ripoffreport.com and see if anyone made a complaint.

The Marriot is always looking for people. Try them out until you find the job that is right for you and love. http://greatjobs.marriott.com

NYU's site has info on becoming a nurse.

Best of luck,
