There is plenty of work for nurses in the UK, even if you want to work casually there will always be a need for nurses to cover sick leave which happens every single shift 24.7 There is a global nurse shortage, you will easily pick up work.
Nursing is a really hard job, i have been batteling with whether the pros out way the cons for a long time and i am still not sure. Some shifts i love it and think it is such a privilage to work so closely with people, to see them at their worst and to help them and really make a difference can be very rewarding, but then there are times i think it is the worst job in the world, so much responsibility but pretty poor pay and often really misunderstood by the public. Shift work is something that i will not physically be able to do forever it is a real strain.
I have been nursing 5 years and studied at Monash in Melbourne (Australia) I think the course prepared me fairly well for the 'real world' of nursing, however there were also lots of things that it would have been nice to cover in more detail that i had to figure out while on-the-job, but every area of nursing is different so it probably isn't possible for them to cover all that you will need to learn during the uni course. If you own a degree - or any other qualification - then you'll already be ahead of the crowd when it comes to searching for professions. My mate has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, but he stumbled upon some great guidance on the site in the resource box below which guided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is loads of assistance on the site regarding other professions.
