Other Careers For Nurses

Marilyn Said:

???NURSES OR DENTAL HYGENISTS/OTHER CAREERS?

We Answered:

I think dental hygenist would be an excellent choice, the pay is decent as are the hours. I think they basicially get paid by the hour and there is not much in the way of benefits but the job will always be in demand and you can do it anywhere, and yes the certificate will be applicable anywhere. Nursing is a great career also but very demanding and really you need to have a calling for that more I think

Wesley Said:

What other careers are along the line of social worker or nurse?

We Answered:

Social worker: can work in the criminal justice field as a therapist, case worker or manager, group-home staff, etc.

Of course, there are the social services jobs for social workers (like working with foster care, child services, services for mentally ill adults).

Question for nurses or any other health career holders?

We Answered:

More important than the school you go to and even your GPA is that you past your licensing exam and your school is accredited. I have never been specifically asked what my GPA was in nursing school nor on an application or in an interview. If you work for a hospital or other well established or larger institution often times there is no room for negotiation in regards to pay rate, as it is very bureaucratic in nature: they take into consideration your degree (adn or bsn), the amount of related experience as a registered nurse, and the shift that you will be working. The pay difference may be anywhere from a few cents to a dollar or two for having a BSN, working night shift and/or weekends can give you an extra couple of dollars. Additional certifications (like ACLS, PALS, etc.) or a second major or a minor is a foreign language or other health related field of study ( like social work, public health, leadership, etc.) can assist you in getting slightly higher pay at some facilities. You don't necessarily have to specialize in fact most hospitals refer or even mandate that new graduates start off in med/surg, then you can work up to pediatrics, ER, labor and delivery, or some other specialized unit after a year or two. The difference in pay is just like with any other profession, the amount of education, level of responsibility, specific facility (and what they are able to offer), how badly they are needing staff ( and how saturated the market in your area is), also the amount of liability the nurse is likely to incur doing their normal work duties.

Working in the health care previous to finishing school, might give you an advantage over other applicants in landing a job. Also being open to working in alternative types (often time thought of as 'less desirable') of facilities like prisons, home health, agency, or long term care. An other determinate of pay is the area of the country in which you working, pay is realitive to the cost of living; most RNs aren't going to start out making $30 per hour in Tulsa, though that my not be unrealistic for larger cities on the east coast.

We Answered:

Nursing home, school, home health

Herbert Said:

would a nursing diploma be useful for careers other than nursing?

We Answered:

Have you considered switching to social work? Similar challenges, better hours, less pay maybe, still can be rewarding helping people, no shift work, out in the community
