Registered Nurse Career Path

Frederick Said:

College student interested in becoming Registered Nurse. I have a few questions about the job?

We Answered:

Nurses can usually and always find jobs, even in Florida, since they are in demand. To first confirm with yourself whether if nursing job is for you(since you have a variety of interests in career field),
you can try for observership in a hospital nearby you, with the help of your college, you can do this for couple of days and though they may or may not allow one in the intensive care unit(you can give it a try), this way you can speak to the nurses about their professional and personal experiences and observe what is involved in the course of their duty. A compassionate heart and eager to work and learn, is what i guess is required to be a nurse.
And also in a medical or university bookstore there will be a career guide for nurses, so you can get info. about all the details involved, from nursing college, to fees, to different types of career
for them, the work involved, the salaries etc. etc.
In brief, all nurses who are fresh to work start with observing and assisting most of the work till the supervising nurse feels they can handle the work-load unsupervised. This is a norm. in the medical profession. As per shifts, you will probably start with the floor duty and if you are into night duties, they will love you for it. It can vary from 8 to 12 hr shifts.

Good luck.

Which career path should I take?

We Answered:

You like medicine- both human and animal, focus your studies on the transfer of disease between humans and animals.

You could double major in animal science( or patho-biology) and Nursing. Both majors require teh same core science classes, but will focus on either humans or animals.

It is a very ambitious plan, and since most nursing majors are not expected to carry another major, it could take you longer to graduate ( perhaps 5 yrs). But the payoff with be strong science skills and understanding that will make you attractive to employers.

While you are doing clinical rotations and learning to work in a hospital, you could also volunteer your spare time to a vet clinic or animal shelter.

Vet school is HARD to get into and NOT worth the debt! Cant tell you how many ppl I know who do ge their hopes up and find the cannot get into Vet school and have no back up plan. So the Nursing WITH animal sci( or Patho-bio) is a good backup.

Which career path would your choose?

The RN will give you the greatest number of options. You could blend and do both RN and sonography. There are Radiologic RNs that are involved in managing and monitoring the patient during radiologic interventions/procedures. Everything you mentioned has some overlap with the RN There are literally a bazillion different things you can do if you are an RN.

Outlook for employement is wonderful...there are not enough...especially with the large number of "baby boomers" aging and needing healthcare.

With an RN you can work in OR, emergency room, psychiatry, neonatal intensive care, ICU or CCU, Rehab, Medical or Surgical floors, Obstetrics or Gynecology, Schoo Nurse, Camp Nurse, Office Nurse, Homehealth Nursing, Case Managment, Education, Outpatient Services, work for the jails or prison systems, a variety of pediatric specialties, be a flight nurse, Onocology, Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics, Forensic Nursing, Cardiovascular/peripheral vascular, Nursing Administration, and then there are another options of advance practice if you want to get a Master's Degree. You can work as a CRNA (Nurse Anesthetist), there are a variety of Nurse Practitioner options also. The sky is the limit... my wife is working on a Phd. in Nursing right now. She is a full-bird Colonel in the army. The list is endless. There are some limits with your other choice since it is so specialized....

I am not saying it will be easy....but I think you will have many options. I hope I answered your question.

Graduating soon.. which career path to follow?? (LONG)?

If you chose to be a Realtor, How much you make would depend on the economy. if its bad you won't make much - worst if there's another recession, if it is going good then you can make enough to make a good living. Any job where you have to sell something depends on the economy.

I would say you should try "Nursing assistant." and get your degree/diploma there then you can take the test to become a registered nurse, and make a lot of money (at least $18 an hour + benefits) taking care of people in the hospital...you would be the link between the patient and Doctor. You can work days or nights giving you plenty of time to be with family. You would have a head Nurse that can help you have a flexible schedule, as long as you are good at the job and they like your personality Which should be no problem, since you like making people feel at ease and you would explain medical terms in plain English for them.
