Registered Nurse Program

Lauren Said:

I'm interested in studying for registered nurse program and dont know which college is better?

We Answered:

It depends on whether you desire an Associates or Bachelors degree.
There are still schools in which you can obtain the RN degree in 2 years if you've completed most of the pre-requisites courses.
Check with your State University/College system to see which school offers what you need.
The rest especially in nursing is a matter of cost and reputation.
Would you rather pay 200K for a degree from a private school vs 20K from a public institution?
Whether you attend Harvard or Hardly Ever Community College there is only one state certifying board to decide if you meet the required criteria to practice in your state.

Diane Said:

how to become a registered nurse? what is the program called?

We Answered:

The fastest way is to get an Associate Degree in Nursing at a community or junior college and then you can take the state RN licensing exams. An Associate Degree is a two year degree, but it is all nursing, so most people have to take about a year's worth of other general courses before they start the nursing program, such as English, Math, Biology, and so forth before they are admitted into a Nursing degree program. If you have never taken any college courses, this is where you would need to start. Is there a community college in your area that has a nursing program? If you're not sure, talk to some of the nurses at your local hospital or where you work. Then call and make an appointment with an Admissions counselor to find out what courses you'll need to take before you can be admitted to their Nursing program, and an appointment with the Financial Aid Officer to find out how you get help in paying for your education. Start taking the general courses that you're going to need--community colleges are geared for working adults, so you can probably get classes in the evenings or on weekends if you still need to work while attending school. Be prepared for a waiting list--many Nursing programs have a 1-2 yr. waiting list, and if that's the case, put your name on the list and then take your general courses while you're waiting. Also be prepared to be told that you CANNOT work while in the nursing program. Technically, they can't stop you from working, but they may tell you that anyway because some schools think the nursing program is too much work and a student can't handle the course load and work both. If your school forbids you from working while in the nursing program, you'll have to look for another school or figure out how to support yourself for those two years without an income. The school that I attended said you couldn't work, but a lot of people did because they had to. It's a lot of work, but well worth it in the end. Good luck to you.
