Registered Nurses Job

Andy Said:

Future job aspects for future Registered Nurses?

We Answered:

Don't worry about it. As far as I know there will continue to be a demand for RNs. Getting into the health care/medical field is always a good decision, given you are doing it for the right reasons.

And I am doubting the salary will decrease... the only think medical careers / RNs have to worry about is Obamacare... If it is passed, then our careers (and salary) will suffer with Obama's plan.

Read that stuff.

Norma Said:

Are there any Registered Nurses here that love their job?

We Answered:

Graduated in 1986 and remained in the field until 2005. I LOVED my job for many years but left mainly because I was just burnt out. The pluses for me were that I could work 3- 12 hr shifts and get paid for 40 hrs., I loved helping and caring for people and getting to know them and their families, it was intellectually challenging on a lot of levels, there was constant change so you never suffer from boredom, my coworkers were awesome men and women, etc. As far as being rewarding, I would say absolutely. When I went home at the end of a shift I left confident that I made a difference in the lives of every patient I touched. It's a good feeling to know that when someone is at their worst you have done everything you can help heal them, even if all you could do was provide a gentle human touch and kindness when there was no one else to do that. The greatest challenges for me were under staffing, which means you have more patients and less time for each of them, and of course the loss of any patient is upsetting. Respect? From most people, yes. There are always the old-school doctors that don't respect or appreciate what we did for their patients and who treated us poorly and of course the patients and their family members who saw as as their personal maid rather than a professional there to provide care.I think to be a good nurse you need to have compassion, a genuine desire to help and a LOT of patience and understanding, the ability to think clearly & calmly and act/react quickly and calmly and a nature that allows you to deal with stress and not let it get to you.

Yvonne Said:

Do registered nurses need on the job training?

We Answered:

As part of nursing school, RN's undergo "clinicals" or "practicums" which is essentially on the job training.

Once you have graduated, you are typically on "orientation" or however many shifts you/the hospital agrees upon. Which is, essentially, a buddy shift.

Sara Said:

what are some of the job duties of Registered Nurses?

We Answered:

Nurses do a lot of things based on their experience and where they work, and their specialties. Besides the basic work (the injections, etc you mentioned above), they can specialize as nurse anesthetists who deal with anesthesia, midwives who advise pregnant women and help with delivery, public health nurses who work within a community to spread knowledge, or nurse practitioners, who are almost like physicians.
