Registered Nursing School

How do I begin registered nursing school in Georgia when I have never attended college?

We Answered:

You'll need to start at a community college with a year of pre-reqs. The college more than likely has an RN program, so an advisor will show you what classes are required. You have to have certain classes done before you can apply for the nursing program. The advisor will be able to tell you what ones your college requires. Get all those classes and math done ASAP and apply for the program!!! I'm willing to bet there is a waiting list, so get the classes done, apply, and get on that list. By the time you finish the rest of your classes, you should be ready to enter the program. Nursing entrance is usually very limited so it's competitve. You need to make up for that GED, so you need to do really good. ( I was in the same boat). And don't forget, your not stopping with the RN, so other colleges will be looking at these transcripts in the future, so don't play! Talk to people about what the classes are like and what instructor to try and get. I've heard to take microbiology by itself, with no other classes it's so hard. Make sure you can easily handle your load and not have a meltdown. sooo. Now, just go to the community college, speak to an advisor. Find out if you need to take a placement test, then take it asap. Ask what classes you need for the RN program, & what ones need to be done to apply. Go to financial aid, apply. Go to student registration, register. You will most likely have to go to an orientation, which is probably where you sign up for classes. If at any point you get confused, tell the advisor! Remind them you have never attended before! You'll get the hang of it by the time your going for your doctorate! good luck!!! I hope I helped!

I am planning to go away with 2 young kids to attend registered nursing school, any advice?

We Answered:

I will pass on some advice I was given just a few years ago when I went to nursing school and had children in aprox. the same grades: Chef Boyardee and Franco American are fantastic cooks!!! Believe me, my kids hate the stuff now but we existed on it for the 2 years I was in the program. You will NEED to set up some time for yourself to study. What I did was set a bedtime 7:30 and all the time up until that was for me and the kids. After they went to bed I cracked my books, sometimes I could crack them while they were up but I never retained what I read. Don't be afraid to ask for help is also very important. Kentucky had some childcare grants---FREE that allowed me to afford childcare for those times when school was cancelled or had a half day. You can get some tips by getting in contact with the nursing dept. at the school you plan on attending and find out if such a program exists in your state. You are also better off getting the basic req.s out of the way first. You won't have time if they throw in some community service or clinicals after class. The hours are never what they tell you they are going to be. I also used multi colored pens to rewrite my notes at the end of the day so that important info stuck out.

What are the chances that I will make it into Med. School with a Registered Nursing major?

We Answered:

True, they do primarily look at GPA and MCAT scores, but your friend is completely right. As a registered nursing major, med schools will really look down on your application because it's not a hard science major. If you want a shot at med school, major in either chemistry, biology, or bioengineering

Do Registered Nurses need to be Nurse assistants to get into Nursing school?

We Answered:

Being a CNA may help you get a feel for whether you have the stomach for the job, but it's nothing like actually being an RN.

The schooling to become an RN is very rigorous and involves lots of clinical time in the hospital so you will know EXACTLY what to do when you actually start working as an RN!

Everything that you'll need to do as a nurse you will do first with an instructor standing over you like a hawk to make sure you get it right.

I want to become a registered nurse, what's a good nursing school that doesn't' cost too much?

We Answered:

It would help if you told us where you live!

Most community colleges have ADN programs. Do you want to get an associate's degree or do you want a bachelor degree? I am in nursing school for my BSN. I did not want to waste time with an associates degree, then have to go back for my BSN.

Most nursing programs are not cheap, and it is normally not advisable to work while in nursing school. Between classes, clinicals, and studying, you don't have much free time.
