Become a PCT or a PCA at a hospital. As a Patient Care Tech you will get experience in the hospital or nursing home that will help you out big time when you get to clinicals. Most places will hire you if you are in a nursing program but otherwise you will need a certificate. This is what I am doing while in Nursing School!!!

I answered your other question too, but the specific title is usually a Maternal-Newborn nurse, because you don't just care for the baby, you care for the couplet of mom and baby.

**Edited to add to Rick: Nurses are trained in the basics to care for all patient populations / conditions. But most nurses, once they graduate and gain employment, stick to one certain "specialty" or clinical area. Med/surg nurses do not work in the ER, or OR, or in labor & delivery. Labor & delivery nurses do not work in oncology or orthopedics or psych. When you get a job, you get a huge amount of education and training from your employer which applies to the clinical specialty area where you will work, and you ONLY work in that area. The only exception is float pool nurses, who are cross trained to multiple units.

Most babies that are newborns are healthy, and they still need nursing care.
