Rn Nursing Salaries

Patrick Said:

How much can I expect to make after graduating from Nursing School (RN)?

We Answered:

I think it depends where you live in NJ. I live in NY and I started off as a new graduate at $70, 000.

Janice Said:

What states have the highest RN salaries?

We Answered:

boston, and new york

the pay scale is important here. For example if you are a traveling nurse you might get more per hour but less benefits. Many of the nurses at a hospital near me are making $40 per hour - with a starting salary of $27 per hour, so the more experience you have the more you will make.

Milton Said:

does OR nursing pay more than other specialties?

We Answered:

No, overall they don't. What your friend might be alluding to are "private scrubs or private assistants" that are surgical nurses (or sometimes surgical techs) that work for a surgeon, not the hospital. Also, working in the OR means you can take "call" meaning you are paid a predetermined amount or a percentage of your hourly wage to be "on call". If you actually come in for a procedure, you are paid your regular wage for that, often in addition to "call" pay. That can add up, but "call" is shared by most of the staff and a lot of people like it, so you take what you can get.

The nurses that are paid the most money are the ones that are savvy enough to negotiate their salary when hired and not just take the first number human resources or the nurse recruiter throws their way.

Obviously, RN's that seek additional credentials and certifications in their area of specialty are going to make more on the hour and if the hospital has a "clinical ladder", the higher their achievements in "bedside nursing", the higher their salary.

Also, something that might have given your friend an idea about that is certain departments that are the "money maker" for the hospital have more leeway at offering higher wages to new employees, and also for creating new positions for additional staff.

Hope that helps clear up some generalized misconceptions. As far as salary in Texas, hopefully someone can give you an accurate quote....all I can say is most RN's in the US start off around $22-25 an hour (plus shift and weekend bonuses) .
