Specialized Nursing Careers

Margie Said:

I'm just about finish with my BA in mangement, and I want to pursue a degree in nursing. What do I need to do?

We Answered:

I wouldn't look to a CC unless the program is for a Masters degree. There are Masters Degree's in Nursing (for non-nursing Bachelor's degree students) programs popping up all over the country. This way, you'll have a BA in management and a MS in Nursing - best bang for you buck!

I know the U of MN - Twin Cities has this kind of program, and as well as Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis, but I don't know of any others.

Physician vs Specialized Nursing?

We Answered:

Nursing is an excellent field, and there is a lot of opportunity and diversity in what you can do if you are a Registered Nurse. With nurse practitioners, specialty nursing such as surgical nurse, critical care nurse, geriatric nursing, and dozens of areas of interest you can not go wrong with a good nursing degree. You can later add a masters degree and a nurse practitioner makes excellent money. If you practice nursing as an RN for a few years, you can always apply to medical school later on.

Addiction specialized nursing?

We Answered:

Hi,
The addiction field is a huge and rapidly growing one. There will be a lot of need for your services in specialized clinics and so forth.

I would suggest learning a lot more about this field. It can be draining. It requires a special person. You see a lot of repeats depending on how effective the center(s) you work in are. I started out in this field in 1979, it took a lot out of me. I have learned a lot since.

I have referenced some resources I have free & a book if you want to find out a lot more. I would suggest you really learn about the field. You might also volunteer in a rehab center.

Warmly,
Pam Ragland

Wondering what Hematologic/Oncologic Nursing was like?

We Answered:

Toxic. Scary. Once you specialized in oncology nursing then you need to be always careful in dealing with the medication, medication preparation and radiation, even pt after radiation treatment.
