Travel Nursing Career

Ruth Said:

What Are The Tax Implications Of Travel Nursing?

We Answered:

If you are a US citizen and working outside the US, you still have to file and pay US taxes. Uncle Sam cuts us a break known as the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, and allows us to exclude up to $80,000 of earned income from US income tax if we meet certain requirements. Of course, there's always a catch, or in this case, several, and even if you owe no tax, you're still usually required to file an annual tax return.

You are allowed an automatic extension to June 15th to file your US tax return, but the tax payment is due by April 15th.

If you are traveling in the US, you will continue to owe taxes as you always have. Even if you are traveling, you will have a permanent home address, or as they use for military personnel, a state of legal residence. If your residence is in a state with state and local income taxes, you may have to pay taxes there also, depending on the laws of your individual state/local area.

For this reason, many traveling employees, set up a permanent residence in states without an income tax, like Texas, to avoid income tax issues at that level. You will still have to maintain some form of residence, which might be a family member or friends home, but if it is your own home, property taxes would apply.

Is travel nursing fun while young?

We Answered:

If you truly want to be independent, you will need to let go of your umbilical cord! If you fear of being away from your comfortable surroundings, then becoming a traveling nurse is not right for you. Just be a regular nurse.
