choosing a Nursing career?

We Answered:

I've been an RN since 1995 and I've never regretted it. The pay is good. There are so many types of nursing you can go into. Here are just a few: Hospital nurses including: staff nurse (on many different floors/specialties) emergency room, operating room, neurology, medical surgical, nephrology, newborn nursery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, cardiac, intensive care, endovascular... on and on. Of course you can move up and get into management as well... but I prefer patient care so I work in the operating room as a circulator nurse... I'm not a scrub nurse... they are different roles in surgery. You could also work for the state or government, law nursing, school nursing, or even go into the military as an officer after you get your degree.
Some basic facts about the career of nursing is you can get a two year degree or you can get a four year degree. In the two states that I've worked there is no difference in pay because you do the same thing. You take the same test to become a registered nurse and get your license. I have and associates degree in nursing (ADN): a two year degree. My husband has a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) which is a four year degree. I think for either a man or a woman it's a great field to get into. People will always need health care. Depending on the state you plan on practicing in you can look at www.payscale.com to see what nurses are making in your area. Hope this helps.

What type of nursing careers are out there?

We Answered:

Hello,

There are many path to becoming a nurse. You can earn your associate degree (2 years) in nursing and get your RN license or you can get your bachelor in nursing degree (4 years) to get your RN license. For people who already have a bachelor's degree, they can do an accelerated BSN degree program (12-18 months) or enter into master's degree program directly (about 3 years).

With an RN license you can work as a staff nurse in all the branches in medicine.

With a master's degree you can work as a license nurse practitioner in a specific field like pediatric, oncology, primary care etc.... . These guys are just like medical doctors. They see patients. They diagnose their diseases and advice them on a treatments course. They can prescribe medication in some states. Depending on the state you live in, you may be able to practice nursing independently of a doctor, however some state require that a doctor supervises you.

Now you do have CNA ( about a month) or LPN (9-18 months). These are nurse as well. CNA are certified nursing assistant who take care of the elderly etc... LPN are license practical nurses their job is to mostly give medication.

questions for nurses about nursing careers?

We Answered:

I do Case Management now-- I am an RN. I've done Medical, Surgical, Radiology, Short Stay in hospitals and Home Health and Nursing Homes.
Now I work 5 days/40 hours a week. Most of the 'floor' nurses work 12 hour shifts. I work 8 hours, actually 8-1/2 with 1/2 hour for lunch.
Over $70,000 per year, but that is with 39 years of experience.

Nurses should wake up to the power they hold. There is such a shortage. It is because they are helpers, they will not stand up for themselves. I think strikes don't help, but I do think nurses have far more power than they realize.

How can nurses advance their careers? and What type of classes do they take in nursing school?

We Answered:

there are different levels of nursing, the top being that of a LPN, which is essentially a nurse that can do whatever a doctor does, but gets paid less. depending on your job title, you can attend classes to gain a better title, which in return gives you more pay, and possibly more authority.
classes in nursing school are your typical pre-med classes (biology, chemsitry, organic chemistry, and calculus), and nursing classes (phelbotomy, pharmcology, and pathology).
although you might not want this, if you're young enough (20-35 years old), i suggest you go to med school to become a MD. the reason i say "if you're young enough" is because med school is four years, in which afterwords, you need to endure 80 hour work weeks as an intern, which is no easy task. but of course, not all mid-age people are lacking in energy, so if you feel this is the way to go, no matter what your age, then i suggest it. the pay is ALOT better, your scope of practice is ALOT wider giving you more freedom to help patients legally, and after your internship and residency, your job is extremely secure. also if you wish to go private practice, your hours will be what you make them to be, and your pay will be even more than if you worked in a hospital.
