For Dentists and Dental Students: Why did you choose dentistry?

We Answered:

This sounds like a survey or school paper question. If you want to know because you are considering Dentistry as a career, please post again. Otherwise, I really don't have the time to answer someones school work. Not trying to be mean, just truthful.

Dr. Dan

Update: OK, here goes.
1. I like being in charge. Most Drs are type A personalities. You have to be to survive the rigors of school and the instructors. You learn very quickly to stand up and defend your opinion. You have to have confidence in your skills and decisions or you will fail. I didn't want to be chairside, I wanted to be the DOC! Many chairsides get frustrated after they realize this.
2. You have to have good people skills. Most people DON'T want to be in the chair. I have heard it said that most Dentists would be great stand-up comics. You learn to put your patient at ease and this means you are confident in your skills. If being talkative and outgoing are not in your personality, that's ok because quiet and confident is also fine.
3. Artistic bend. Very good practioners have a strong artistic leaning. Alot of Dentistry is somewhat "cookbook". The best part is the Art of Dentistry.
4. A love of learning. The field is advancing VERY quickly. There is a constant need to keep up with new materials, new basic science research, new techniques, etc. Your quest for knowledge should NEVER end.
5. MOST IMPORTANT!!! A love for Dentistry! If you hate this job, it's the WORST! If you love it, you enjoy work every day. It's still work, but you enjoy the challenge.

Becoming a skilled practioner takes incredible effort. You will hate Dental school some days and love it the next. Many long hours, frustration at your lack of skills, exhausted with studies.... but the day you walk the stage.... and the Dean says "Congratulations, Doctor".....You are on the top of the world!

I suggest observing a typical day in a dental office. Find a Dentist who is interested in helping and mentoring you and watch what they do every day. You might be surprised. Spend a week shadowing them at the office, it will really open your eyes.

Hope this helps, Dentistry is a GREAT career!

Ricardo Said:

question for anyone in nursing field?

We Answered:

when did you decide to study nursing?
Age 10, my 7 year old brother was battling cancer. He won! He loved his nurses.

what school did you earn your degree at?
Elgin Community College in Elgin, IL.

how long have you been nursing?
4.5 years.

if an RN, how long did it take for you to become one?
It took 2 years for my Registered Nurse, but I already had all my pre-reqs done from a previous degree. I just recently finished my BSN (took 20 months) from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL.

where was the first place you worked as a nurse?
Nursing home and a community hospital (orthopedics and neurology).

where do you work now?
A different community hospital, ER observation.

What do you enjoy most about being a nurse?
I enjoy the teaching part. The doctors only have limited amounts of time to spend with the patients. Our job as their nurse is to make sure they know what is going on and to be there as an advocate.

Is there someone who inspired you to become a nurse?
Besides my brother's nurses? No.

Do you have any advice for someone who might be considering a career in nursing?
Call up your local hospital and ask if Human Resources could hook you up with a nurse. You could shadow them for a shift and really get to know how it is. Just remember, every unit and every hospital is different.

Are you a speciality nurse?
No. Just an Regular Nurse RN, haha. Just joking. I don't have any friends who were nurses, and that's what they thought the "RN" stood for.

how long are your shifts?
12 hours nights, 7pm-7am.

how much do you get paid?
average is around $30 an hour.

did you start towards your career right after highschool?
No, I was a certified dental assistant for 7 years first.

do have any interest advancing in your career?
Definitely, I eventually want to teach, so I need to get my Master's fo that.

why did you choose to work as a nurse?

What was the high point and low point of your career so far?
High point? A warm thank you gift from a family when I went to the patient's funeral.

Low point? Taking a stance against management regarding unsafe staffing practices.

was it hard to find a job in nursing?
Not at all. It was tough deciding which job to take!

do you think it is a stressful job?
Yes, in all environments at some times. But some places are much more stressful than others. A red flag to overworked and stressed out nurses is a high rate of turn over on a unit. ALWAYS ask about turnover!

why did you decide to become a nurse rather than a doctor?
As I said before, doctors only have limited time with the patients. Also, they are usually business owners. I don't like the whole business part of being a doctor. Plus, as a nure, I can leave one job for another whenever I want. As a doctor, you have patients that rely on you. You can't just up and move to another hospital or state as a doctor. The hours are much more flexible for nurses too.

how long have you been working where you work now?
I actually just started this job 2 months ago. Love it!

Jane Said:

All nurses! Please answer my survey.?

We Answered:

Most nurses wont have time for this as they are usually overworked. They constantly get calls from the hospital if they can come in for work. They are begged by their coworkers. The most common question is..."will they be floating me?" If they work at night, I guarantee you they will be sleeping during the day and will have no time to answer this. With the time they have, they would be spending it with their families.

I doubt you will get any answers from actual RNs. They are always called in for work. My parents are doctors and know several nurses who have either died from being overworked or have lost their minds and have been placed into the psych units. That is how hard they work. They dont care for their own well being but care more for others. They are truly one of the most respectable human beings and have sacrificed so much.
