Why Nursing Is A Good Career

Roland Said:

Why when people are asked which career is better do they always side with nursing???

We Answered:

Your first answerer needs to do some research before answering. When I just checked Salary.com for the area that I live in, a dental hygienist had a higher salary than that of an RN. This response in not necessarily accurate. Before you can take that advice you need to look specifically in your area.

As for the career opportunities, while you see more ads for nurses, you need to see what criteria they are requesting- BSN or MSN. Just because there is an ad does not mean that anyone with their RN license can meet the qualifications. Most school nurses in my area require them to have the BSN and high schools are now requiring an MSN. I also found out that most dentists in the area that I live in go directly through the community colleges for their staffing needs- very rarely will they place an ad.

The flexibility is there, but you will always have the opportunity to be working shift work. I have seen some local hospitals hiring only registry or part-time nurses.

Before one speaks out they need to look at all aspects.

While your first answerer made reference to a dental hygienist only being able to work in a small office- maybe she should check into what is actually there. My brothers sister in-law works for a so-called small dental office and makes over six figures a year. She gets full benefits, 4 weeks vacation, quarterly bonuses and a 401K plan that is fully vested. How is that a bad option? She is also kept up on the newest training and treatment methods. She loves her job and does not have to work afternoons or midnights! Before the rude comments come- she has flexible hours and a very good boss.

Karen Said:

Is 26 too old to pursue a career in nursing or occupational therapy?

We Answered:

NO WAY! i know people that are in their 50s and just now going to nursing school (whether they just found their calling, are changing careers, etc.)! it is never too late to pursue something you enjoy.

i agree with nashgirl.. i think the average starting age for a nurse is older than you would think and it is true that most are second career nurses.

Theodore Said:

Gertrude Said:
