Able 2 Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy in the ARMY?

We Answered:

I believe OT, PT, etc are in the Medical Service Corps, under the Army Medical Department (AMEDD). You can find out more at the AMEDD website. http://www.amedd.army.mil/
When you sign up there is an 8-year statutory obligation, though you may just be signing up for a 3- or 4- year active duty or reserve contract. The rest of the 8 years you are subject to be called back; after that you may resign completely. Of course, many choose to complete 20 years or more for the retirement.
These days, deployment is very likely. If you sign up, you should assume this will be the case.
I am a physician in the Army (medical corps) and would highly recommend it if you feel it is right for you. There are pros and cons as with everything else in life; pros- decent pay, bonuses, being freed from the financial side of practice, travel, good retirement, camaraderie, providing a service for your country and for wounded soldiers. Cons- you will give up some freedom regarding where you are assigned (though they will take requests into consideration), possibility of deployment and separation from family, chance of working in hazardous conditions (you would not be in combat per se but could be placed close to the action); you must also fulfill certain administrative requirements like physicial fitness tests, maintain normal weight, and attending basic and later, advanced training.

I would speak with an AMEDD recruiter, not a regular recruiter. If you ask they will be happy to put you in contact with other OTs in the Army who can tell you more. If you sign up make sure you ask about bonuses and loan repayment!
