Corey Said:

Moving to Roanoke, Va, what public schools are best for a child with Autism?

We Answered:

Roanoke does not offer very much but your best bet would be Cave Spring Elementary School located off U.S. Route 221 in Roanoke.

Shannon Said:

Can my son get ssi for mild autism amd adhd?

We Answered:

Everyone I know gets denied, and they have to keep appealing. Some get lawyers or there are free advocacy organizations that help out with this. My son was denied, and I appealed. When I was turned down again, I stopped trying. Many years later when I learned he should not have been denied, I called them asked them why. I was told that I should have kept appealing by the lady who answered the telephone at SSI. How crazy is that? Anyhow, he is recovered now, but he could have received so much more help at the time if I had SSI. To learn about recovery see www.heidinotes.com

Sara Said:

What is a career that involves diseases such as autism, aspergers syndrome, or other neuro diseases?

We Answered:

Honestly, without a masters or doctorate, not much.

You could be a neurologist, psychologist, psychiatrist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist...the list goes on. But they all require more than a bachelor's degree.

I'm currently finishing my psychology major and I intend to go on to get a Ph.D in clinical psycholgy, with the intent to work with other autistic people.

Also, autism isn't a disease. It's a disorder. There is a difference. If you're going to work with autistics, you need to learn that calling us "diseased" is highly offensive. Calling a disorder is even offensive to some.
