Career In Occupational Therapy

Terrance Said:

How much physical ability does it take for a career in occupational therapy? I have MD. j?

We Answered:

I have worked with two different mobility challenged OTs. It depends on your work setting.

am planning on a career in Occupational Therapy- do u think that being a nurses aid is good way to experienc?

We Answered:

Only if you've never been around patients at all. A nurse's aide's job has nothing to do with occupational therapy but it will help you get used to being around and touching patients. If you do go that route, try to get a job in a rehab hospital or on a rehab floor where patients may actually be receiving occupational therapy. If you're used to being around patients, becoming an aide first is a waste of time. You may want to try volunteering or observing in an OT office.

It is a good thing to put on your resume or OT school application, but I think that if you had the chance to be a rehab aide, it would be much better. Contact local nursing homes or hospitals and ask if they have any rehab aide/tech job openings. This way, you will be in the therapy environment and chances are, if the staff knows you are going into the field (which many rehab aides/techs are) the staff will help teach you on various techniques.
Good luck
