baby with medical problems?

We Answered:

I really cannot help you other than just brightening up your day a little bit, hopefully.

You and your husband are two amazing people. The world is a better place with people like you. I bet this little boy is truly blessed to have such a compassionate, patient, and gentle family like yours. He is blessed tohave you and you are blessed to have him. It is truly a miracle from The Lord that this little boy is still with us. Everyone has a job to fulfill here on earth that The Lord has given them, and this little man must have a very special job. God truly kissed this little boys head when he was born and gave him the strength to breathe one more breath. I truly do not know anything about what you are going through, but it seems as if you two are very patient with this baby. If you dont mind, I will share my story as well to let you know that you are not alone. This is my cousin, not myown son.

Austen was born a healthy baby, but would not continue to to be for long. At birth, Austen weighed 6.15lb which is about average. About a month later, Austen was sleeping but I noticed he was very pale, almost white. His parents rushed him to the hospital where he was to undergo 3 sleep studies ad they stuck a tube up his nose for five minutes. I went to the hospital withthe parents, I saw Austen crying. He came home almost a week later with one new thing, oxygen. The oxygen tubes were always running through the house and it was extremely hard to bathe him and put clothes on him. Almost a month went by and the results from the tests came back, he had sleep apnea, which is the disease where you stop breathing multiple times in your sleep. The family went home happy, now they had an answer and Austen was off oxygen. Maybe two weeks later he got very sick. Had an awful cough, swollen glands, stuffy nose, and he was just not himself. Knowing what a fragile newborn he was, the family brought him back to the hospital where he had to undergo more tests. After staying in the isolation department of the hospital for a week, austen was diagnosed with RSV, a condition that shuts down your immune system, and whooping cough. He was put back on oxygen until he got healthy. At about six months old, Austen was only about 14 pounds and was still on oxgen. They brought him back to the doctor looking for a definite answer. After more studies were done, he wwas pronounced as a failure to thrive baby, which means the baby grows and develops at a very slow rate. Austen was on oxygen he was 1 and a half. He did many things though, he still swam, not very far from the edge though of course, played ball, and ran. Now he is a happy and healthy 3 yeear old. The point of my story was that perseverance counts. If you stick with it until the end, things will work out, even if it may not be in the way that you want it to happen, but keep going. God gave you the ability to do this job of keeping up with this amazing miracle baby. Good luck and God's greatest blessings to you and your family. Can I please ask his name so that I can pray for him and his amazing family?

Thomas Said:

What therapeutic regimen should we try now?

We Answered:

I've read that some treatments for spastic CP include Botox treatments to loosen the muscles with some successes. This is treatment that has not been highly touted because the success is very individual. My daughter has CP, she is ambulatory and I've had success going through Shriner's hospitals. Don't know if you live in the US but they do serve children worldwide. Therapies for children with CP are time consuming and unfortunately are necessary in order to keep the muscles limber and to prevent both atrophy and contractures. I wish there were a better way but a consultation at a Shriner's hospital is your best bet. Good luck in your endeavors.

will i able to care for a newborn?

We Answered:

I have a very good friend with Cerebral Palsy - she has 2 children, one is 17 months and the other is 3 1/2 and she cares for them expertly even with her weak muscles, however, she is not in a wheelchair as you have said you are. I think with a partner to help you, as we all need, you will do just fine.

Joseph Said:

What do I tell her to make her feel better about her daughter?

We Answered:

Sounds like she would benefit from support group for patients and parents of cerebral palsy.
