is occupational therapy a good career?

We Answered:

It's definitely a great job! The schedule is more flexible than most and the pay is great! It is a lot of school though. But the good thing is, you can always work as occupational therapy assistant while training to become a licensed therapist. The assistants still pull in about 40-50k annually, which is great because it only takes 1-2 years to become one. Best of luck :D

Is Occupational Therapy a good career choice?

We Answered:

It depends on you!

Do you know exactly what's involved in the profession? Do you like helping people? Are you patient? Are you content to work in a field that isn't the most financially rewarding? Are you passionate about healthcare? Are you comfortable helping people with personal tasks that some might be put off by (washing, feeding, defecating, etc.)?

I know I sound ridiculous asking all those questions but you have to be sure of those kinds of things in order decide. Best of luck! :)

Wendy Said:

Is occupational therapy a good career choice?

We Answered:

Yes...any career in the health field is good. But remember it is a lot of hard work and studying and you must be a patient, happy person. Go to your local hospital, see if you can volunteer or shadow some people in the field.

Delores Said:

Is Occupational therapy a good career to get into? also how is the salary? is it good?

We Answered:

I think it is a great field - although I am partial since I am an OT. I think one of the things I like about it is the diversity - you can work in mental health, as a consultant, in the school system, early intervention, nursing homes, hospitals, inpatient rehabs, home health, and I am sure I missed some others. I currently work in home health, where I make $65 per visit (each visit is 45 - 60 minutes) and $75 per eval. Doing home health, I typically see 15 - 20 patients per week (20 is considered full time - so that is 5 patients 4 days a week!) and I get to set my own schedule, so if I want a certain day off, I don't schedule any patients that day. I also work at an inpatient rehab part time and get $45 an hour. I know several people who won't work there because they feel the rate is low. I have a friend who was working in Northern Virginia who made $65 an hour! So you can work with people from 0 - 100+. I have worked with someone 111 years old! Good luck. If you are seriously considering going into the field, call some local facilities and see if you can shadow a therapist for a day or two - or do volunteer work. The best thing would be to go to a few different settings so you get the full picture.

Manuel Said:

I occupational therapy a good career to go into? Also is it hard?

We Answered:

I think occupational therapy is a wonderful career to go into. As an occupational therapist I can work in a variety of fields. Schools, nursing homes, hospitals, ergonomics, etc. If you get bored with one area you can move to another.

As far as being hard, well that depends. It is a masters level entry program now for an OT. Certified Occupational therapy assistants (COTA's) complete a 2 year associates degree. There is a lot of anatomy involved as it is a health career, and I had a lot of psychology as well. You MUST be a people person, or this career is not for you. We give people skills for the job of living and if you are not a people person, you will not be successful.

I would suggest looking into a variety of programs and shadowing some OT's in the area if you are interested. There is no point in going to school before you've even seen an OT in action and decided that it is something you could see yourself doing.

Good Luck
