Job Occupational Therapist

Ken Said:

Which job do you think is better: occupational therapist or barista?

We Answered:

In the long-term, occupational therapist. Unless you could get in with a company that is still expanding and has franchise/shop manager possibilities, barista is pretty much a limited advancement job.

Stacy Said:

I have a question about a job that I am considering. What is the average pay for an occupational therapist?

Terrence Said:

Is anyone an occupational therapist? What's the schooling like and the pay and do you enjoy your job?

We Answered:

To become an occupational therapist, you must be licensed. This requires a master’s degree in occupational therapy, 6 months of supervised fieldwork, and passing scores on national and State examinations. After earning an associate's degree (if you start out at a 2-year college), it usually takes 2 additional years to obtain a bachelor's degree, followed by another year and a half, or two years to obtain a master's degree.

You can read more about how to become an OT here: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos078.htm This is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, an online resource developed by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If you read the entry, you'll also find out what the average salary is. According to the OOH, "Median annual earnings of occupational therapists were $60,470 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $50,450 and $73,710. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $40,840, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $89,450."

I am a former speech pathologist who worked for many years with OTs and PTs and assistants. The educational requirements for speech pathologists are almost identical to those for OTs.

Good luck.
