Jobs Occupational Therapy

Nelson Said:

Is occupational therapy a good field?

We Answered:

Occupational therapy is a good field to go in to because of the way that they try to help people with functioning again as far as daily activities.

As for the job outlook, some work in schools, hospitals, etc.

One place you can check for more information is the U.S. Department of Labor and also check with organizations that give information on Occupational Therapy such as the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Leon Said:

How difficult is the cousework for Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

Different universities have different classes for their OT programs. You can look at the school that you are interested in to see what classes are required as prerequisites, and what are part of the program. You can also talk with someone in the OT department and ask them specific questions about your educational concerns. You don't need to be a genius, but understanding what would be expected of you could take away some of your concerns. Congratulations on starting college next year, how exciting for you.

Dana Said:

What jobs would you get with a degree in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

I am an occupational therapist, and have worked as an OT for 20 years. A graduate will choose to specialise in a particular branch of health/ rehabilitation. This can be physical health (hospital or community based), mental health, or learning disabilities. within each of these areas you would choose whether to work with people who have just become sick / disabled - i.e. through an accident or a mental issue for example or those who have a long term condition, and you can also choose which age group you work with - children, adult, or older people. OTs also work in wheelchair clinics, medical-legal practice (helping sort out how to help people who have had an accident and are claiming disability for example), prisons or in management. quite a few jobs are now foudn in other areas too - some supermarkets employ OTs to help their own staff.
An OT is skilled in probelm solving, and relating to people so often OTs move into other jobs if they want a change. I think about half of my graduate year are now doing other things, which they were able to do because of the degree they had taken. I now work in independent (private) practice - which is another growing area.
finally to say that as well as working for Health you can work in social services - helping assess and provide equipment and adaptations for people who need these to retain their independence.
