Occupational And Physical Therapy

Vicki Said:

physical/occupational therapy?

We Answered:

Each school would have their own admissions requirements, but you do not need pre-med as an undergradute. At my college most students would either be sports science majors or biology majors - and our students do quite well at graduate school.

To be a PT now you will need 3 years of grad school where you do a joint masters/doctoral program. These are selective so your undergrad GPA will need to be high. OT may move in this direction but certainly a masters would be the route of the future. My wife is an OT with a bachelors but those days are changing.

Jacqueline Said:

What is the difference between a physical therapist and a occupational therapist?

We Answered:

To try to explain it in one post is quite difficult. It's best to observe them in the clinic.

There are a lot of similarities...both are rehab professionals that help patients restore function. Generally speaking, however, there are some trends between PTs and OTs: Namely: PT focuses on gross motor skills such as walking, balance, throwing, reaching, etc. OT tends to work on skills of fine motor control: hand function, writing, gripping, etc. OTs also work on cognitive tasks and other activities of daily living...balancing a check book, preparing a meal, etc.

What each professional covers may also vary a little between clinics. At my clinic, we see everything except for hand and elbow disorders for PT...at the clinic down the street, the OTs will take the shoulder.

What is a better degree to get?physical or occupational therapy?

We Answered:

Certificate? Maybe if it was 1970. Boy, Chelsea is a little out of touch, isn't she?

Both PT and OT require a master's degree as a minimum degree. Yet, most PT programs are now doctorate level programs (DPT). Unless you enter a dual degree direct admit program, most PT programs take 7 years to complete. Therefore, most PT programs are slightly longer than OT programs. PTs, according to the bls, have an average salary about $6,000 higher than OTs. Yet, both are great careers with good prospective job growth.

Lloyd Said:

Physical therapy or lpn or surgical technology or occupational therapy assistant?

We Answered:

PTA's make very good money, so I would definitely consider that. LPN, of course, are in high demand and make excellent money...but like the person above me said, the waiting list can be pretty long. Surgical techs also make good money because someone will always need surgery. I can't say much for cota's. OT's can make very good money, but I would go with PTA. It's only 2 years and there are sooooo many pta jobs out there.
