What is the difference between Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

Occupational Therapy deals (but is not limited to) maximizing levels of independence in self-care activities like dressing, personal hygiene, feeding, personal grooming and identify necessary modifications to accomplish these tasks despite injuries or disabilities. They also deal persons who have behavioral issues to determine activities that are useful to maximize a person's ability to function in a community either by enhancing a positive behavior or minimizing destructive behavior.

Physical Therapy on the other hand, deals with a person's gross mobility deficits (but is not limited to) difficulty getting up from the bed, difficulty rising or transferring from a chair, difficulty with walking. Also, pain treatment and management caused by structural issues or injuries are dealt with in an outpatient setting. OT's do these too for those who had training with electromodalities.

It is a misconception that OT deal with hands and PT's deal with legs because PT's and OT's alike can both get certified to be hand therapists. Likewise, they can be both certified to prescribe for appropriate mobility device like a wheelchair.

After an injury or prolongued hospitalization or after being born with a disability, PT's and OT's would evaluate a person's strength, range of motion, activity tolerance and balance (to name a few), address those deficits in order to help a patient accomplish a task. For example, a person with a fractured ankle would have so much hesitation on how to get up from the bed, stand or walk. Both PT and OT, with their combined skills will help this person overcome the fear and teach him strategies so that despite the injury, the patient can still go to the bathroom and do his personal care.

Both require at least a bachelor's degree. OT is now a master's entry level with AOTA (American OT Association) certification to practice. PT is now a doctorate entry level beginnine 2002 -(I maybe wrong with the year). Hope this helps you.
