Occupational Therapist Assistant Jobs

Chester Said:

How long do you have to go to school to be an occupational therapist?

We Answered:

Hi. I've been an Occupational Therapist for over 13 years and love it. You get to work in so many different types of settings. I've had the opportunity to work with newborns all the way up to a woman who was 104! I've been in hospitals, nursing homes, an outpatient clinic, home health, and schools. It takes about 2 years to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). It's an associate's degree. As of 2007, you'll need at least a Master's degree to become a licensed Occupational Therapist. That probably means about 5-6 years in college. It depends on the college you choose and the style of program they offer.

I dont think it is possible to get a degree online. Most of it is hands on training you get when you intern. It is very flexible but most of that depends on where you go to work. Your best bet would be to visit a center and ask all your questions to the therapists there because who knows what these nutcasses will say....

To become an OT you need a graduate degree. To become a COTA, you need an associated degree. The difference in pay is significant. COTA is generally not a stepping stone to OT but it has been done.

You can not just work with a BS degree in OT, it does not exist.
