Occupational Therapy Assistants

Rose Said:

What is the best way to study for the National Board test for occupational therapy assistants?

We Answered:

I took the OTR exams but have talked to many COTA's over the years. There is no simple plan to study from. Just know the information and know how to apply it. Most of the questions are case study questions ie- 72 y/o male falls and fractures his hip.......

There are several different tests given so you and the person your sitting in the room with could have completely different questions. When I took the test it was predominately pediatric questions and all of my friends that I talked to had mostly geriatric questions, you just never know. When taking the test read it slowly and carefully there are usually 2 right questions and you have to pick the BEST of the two.

I studied with the flash cards and the professional study guide and the questions on the test were worded just like those out of the guide ( but not the same questions :- )

Good luck!!!!

Melvin Said:

what do occupational therapy assistants really do? Is it worth the schooling to become licensed?

We Answered:

They do pretty much the exact same thing as the OTR except they cannot write up an intervention plan, they can only contribute to it, also the notes are signed by the OTR, not the OTA. only other difference in my opinion is pay, might as well go for the OTR.

Alfredo Said:

Is there an accepted patient to therapist ratio for occupational therapy assistants?

We Answered:

Not that I ever saw.
OTRs do the evals and COTAs do the therapy. Most individual COTA sessions are 1/2 hour in length. Therefore, a COTA could, theoretically, have 16 sessions per day.
If patients are in a group session, there aren't usually more than 4 or 5 of them in the session, regardless of whether or not a COTA is leading it, or the OTR is.
