Usually the COTA program has no pre reqs. You take the A and P course and other sciene along with the OTA courses.

COTA does not require bio or chem, just A and P and psy.

Well, it depends on a lot of different variables. If you have your stuff together, get a great dissertation advisor, get a proposal together during your first 2 years, and get a good data set in a reasonable amount of time, then 4 years is do-able, or even less. However, my experience is 5-6 yrs. is typical. My advice to you is do your homework - research the faculty at various departments, find someone who is researching something interesting to you and more importantly, someone who is getting funded. My PhD is in nutrition and it took me 8 yrs!!! but that was a horror story.

This website lists many of the colleges and universities that offer a degree in occupational therapy. I just googled "schools for occupational therapy" and found numerous sites listed.

Good luck to you! I have worked with many OTs who were servicing my students and they really made a difference - but you still have to teach as an OT, but it's fun stuff!!! You just don't have a classroom, but get to go into numerous classrooms to work with your students.

To become a hand therapist you first need to be an OTR (registered OT) and then complete a required amount of hours in a hand therapy setting. After that you then register to take a test (administered twice/year) to become a CHT (Certified Hand Therapist). OT school doesn't specialize you in anything, it just gives you a general OT license. After you get your license you can then go on to specialize in whatever area you would like.

Have you already been accepted to a doctorate program or gotten your OT license? If not, I'd suggest just getting your MSOT for now. OT just switched to a master level program and those that I've talked to about getting a doctorate degree say there's no increase in pay or anything once they've gotten it. It's all researched based. Most MSOT programs are 3 years long, however there are some that are 2 (Touro University Nevada in Henderson, NV).
