Occupational Therapy Continuing Education

Tammy Said:

Occupational Therapy Assistant?

We Answered:

It requires an associates degree.

An OT AIDE is trained on the job or requires a brief course.
Not sure of the prices for these, sorry but I looked into it before, just google becoming and OTA.

The assistant works with patients, assisting the therapist with her job and the aide does more cleaning and prepping. Where I live according to salary.com the assistant earns a median salary of $60,000, while an aide earns in the ballpark of $10/hr.

Occupational Therapy....Help?

We Answered:

No, our question is not confusing. It's great first of all that you are interested in gerontology, you'll be in high demand once you become an OT.
As for an undergrad major, take this time to study something that you really find interesting. The truth is, most OT schools will be more interested in you if they find that you are 'interesting', so study something that makes you interesting. All the majors that you suggested are good ones, communications, psych, sociology and some areas of anthropology are very helpful to most humans. You dont have to major in something specific just to get into OT school. Once you are in OT school, trust me, they'll focus on all the 'medical stuff' you'll need to know. Enjoy your undergrad major, and chances are that the more passion you have for what you are studying, the higher your GPA will naturally be.

One more thing, it's impossible to truly separate social work from OT at times, the two field will frequently overlap.

Online college or ground campus?

We Answered:

Just go with a ground campus. Online classes just aren't considered the "real" college life and educational courses. Additionally, I'd only consider online classes to be supplements to ground classes, at best.

College is about the experiences as much as the education.

Would staying in Manhattan,KS or Kansas City be better?

We Answered:

Since you seem to like Manhattan, you could stay there...as long as they have the schooling you need, and you are sure that you are okay with seeing your family occasionally.

Kansas City and Lawrence are hardly right on top of each other, but they are close, so you could always go to school at KU, if that's an option avaliable to you. I know KU has a wonderful doctor program, but you might be able to find what you need at K-State too.

Of course, living around the Manhattan, KS area I would myself be partial to it...but it's about finding your needs.

Good luck!!

To Message Therapists: What accrediting agency accredits message therapy schools in California?

We Answered:

It's never always obvious how to go about hunting for a job, I was in a bit of a hole over the past few weeks when I was job hunting, until I unearthed the resource in the box below that presents sensible tips and tricks. I soon got myself going down the true path, and in a month or so after a couple of interviews I scored a really great job.
