Occupational Therapy Degree Online

Daniel Said:

What are some possible majors for college if i want to become an occupational therapist?

We Answered:

It is IMPOSSIBLE for you to receive a masters of Occupational Therapy degree online, because most programs offer in-class only and you HAVE to to fieldwork or "clinicals". Plus the masters degree is now the MINIMUM needed for graduating since 2007. So do not listen to anyone who say do it online, they do not know what they're talking about. I am in the OT program at a University in Detroit, and you do not necessarily need a separate major to get accepted into the MOT program. I posted a link to their page listing pre-reqs and what you need to get started. Just remember though, that each school will have slightly different variations of classes needed, k? hope i helped!

Jeffrey Said:

How can you find an online college to finish my nursing degree through?

We Answered:

Check out Columbus State Community College. They have many on-line courses that apply to nursing.

Kristina Said:

What should I get my undergraduate degree in before I get my masters in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

I am leaning towards staying with nursing, because it would be vaulable to you working in the long term care and SNF setting as an occupational therapist. There are many patients with complex medical needs and your nursing background would allow you to better meet their needs. However, failing out of nursing school will not get you closer to your next step of starting OT school. In addition, a Masters in OT required much harder course work then undergrad classes. My advice would be to work really hard at nursing and pull up your GPA (if needed) and focus on the link between nursing and OT in the long term care setting to motivate you now. It never hurts to have a fall-back plan.

Gilbert Said:

Can I use my bachelors degree in Special Ed. and Elem. Ed. to get my Masters in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

Below are a couple of related FAQs I found for you. But, basically, find an accredited school and talk to an advisor or someone there to find out. There should be a lot of overlap so you would not have to retake many pre-reqs. Your English, math, etc courses and probably several psychology courses should transfer. You would most likely have to take anatomy, neuropsychology, and a few other pre-reqs before starting OT courses. Check into a school with an advanced master's program I think they call it (as opposed to an entry-level master's). You may be able to get out of a few more courses that way, I am not sure. The info below may help some too. Good luck! OT is a GREAT career!

***I am currently working in another profession. I am considering occupational therapy as a second career. Is this feasible?

A good number of students go back to school to become an occupational therapist or an occupational therapy assistant. You would need to contact the individual educational programs to which you are interested in applying in order to determine what prerequisites you would need to take.

***Who can I contact if I have further questions?

For further information about studying to become an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, send inquiries to educate@aota.org. To ask questions of an OT or OTA student, send inquiries to AskAStudent@aota.org. Allow up to 1 week for a response.
