Occupational Therapy Doctorate

Ernest Said:

Will you have to soon have a doctorate to be an Occupational Therapist?

We Answered:

So far this is not true. The first step was changing to a master's program which was done in 2002. Then the DPT started developing, and while they are in place and ARE being encouraged, the APTA merely has a "vision" that by 2020 all programs will be DPT. This is not set in stone, however. Right now about half of PT programs in the US are DPT level.

At this time, OT is a master's degree and as far as I know does not have any plans to change to a DOT. SLP may be a little different, but I do know that many audiology programs are going to a doctorate so it might be the same for SLP.

Your professor is misinformed. Even if you did enter a masters program, you would be grandfathered in if they later changed to a DPT. This was the same situation for PTs with their BS when it switched to a masters. (and I was one of those)

Stacey Said:

which is better? LA SALLE TAFT- Human Biology or UST - Occupational Therapy? :)?

We Answered:

Both courses are ok, If you are aiming to get a science course in case you pursue Medicine or a doctorate. Some med students say Bio is the best college course for Medicine proper

That said, the other considerations are convenience (location-wise and transpo), and floods. Taft's drainage can be full when it rains and you have to either leap to get from sidewalk to the street, or walk to an area where you don't need long-jump skills. But UST -- both its environs and inside the campus, floods with just an hour of downpour--- esp in the hospital/Med school area. I would tend to think that the latter has more risks of leptospirosis simply because you won't be able to avoid wading through water to leave campus. Keep rainboots (the type that almost reaches your knees) in your locker if you decide to go to UST.
. Check out UP Manila for its available courses as well. In terms of accessibility, it's as convenient as DLSU.
