Occupational Therapy Education

Jackie Said:

Can I get my masters in Occupational Therapy with my bachelors in elementary education?

We Answered:

As long as you have completed all the pre-requisites for an OT program you can. If you haven't, find out what they are and start working on them. All schools are also different. So make sure you are not doing too much work when it isn't needed.

Question about Occupational Therapy Education?

We Answered:

I think that human performance would be good. With OT, especially in a rehab type setting, you do a lot of exercises with patients - although you try to make them as functional as possible. That minor will help give you a better basis as far as human movement concepts. If you are looking to go more into the mental health field, you may want to consider psychology. One thinkg you may want to look into is check with the OT schools you will be applying to and see what their pre-reqs are. There may be a lot toward a minor and you may just want to go with that one.

Good luck!

Occupational Therapy--education requirements?

We Answered:

It depends on where you go for school...I went to the University of New Hampshire and I did not have to take chemistry or physics to get a degree like the link from the person before me states. I did take statistics, anatomy and physiology, neurology, child and adult development and some different psychology courses. And then of course there's the basics that your school will make you take, english, history, etc. and then your electives. So, like I said...depends on where you go. If you look up the schools online they should tell you what classes you will have to take.

Occupational therapy or Elementary Education?

We Answered:

I am an occupational therapy student in the US. Personally, I have found occupational therapy to be a very positive and rewarding career choice. OT's can work with children in a number of settings.

You can work in the schools, working with kids with disabilities to help them master the skills needed to be successful in the classroom (handwriting, paying attention, following directions, using communication devices, etc). This is very similar to elementary education because you get to work in the schools and have summers off! But, you also get to work more individually with kids with disabilities and get to see them make improvements. (If it matters to you, OT's make more money too!)

If you want to work with older kids, you can work with them to teach them job skills and/or independent living skills.

You can also work in a neonatal intensive care unit with the newborns, working on positioning and feeding.

You can work in a birth to three program, helping kids to reach their developmental milestones before kindergarten.

Or, you can work in a children's hospital, helping kids facing illnesses and injuries in rehabilitation programs.

In the US, you can get both your Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in five to six years. Your Bachelor's is typically in OT and your Master's is in OT too. There are a lot of different programs in almost every state. If you want more information, go to www.aota.org . Good luck!

Alex Said:

Can you get a bachelor's in elementary education and then a masters in occupational therapy?

We Answered:

I believe you can but I would choose a different bachelor's degree personally. I would get a health science degree of some sort or something in the science field that has jobs high in demand as a backup.
