Occupational Therapy Exercises

Deanna Said:

What are Aarom, Aron, Prom Exercises in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

THe first responder was correct with what she told you. AAROM stands for Active assistive range of motion. Using the wrist as an example, the person would either flex or extend her wrist as much as they can with the help of their other limb or a therapist. In PROM, or passive range of motion, the therapist would move their wrist up and down until the point they are unable to move it or until it becomes painful for the patient, and in AROM - active range of motion, the patient would move their own wrist up and down as much as she can. Did the therapist give her exercises and not explain them or is it just what the doc ordered on a script? Good luck!

Shelly Said:

What should I get my undergrad degree in if I want to get my Master's in Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

Some universities have a combined bachelors-masters degree, which can save you a year of school. You usually apply to the OT program in your sophomore or junior year of undergrad, and get a master's in occupational therapy in 5 years (including undergrad). If you haven't yet entered college, this could be a good option, since you seem to know that you want to be an OT already. If you plan to get a bachelor's degree, and then go to a different university to get a master's degree, then you should just check out the prerequisites for the master's program you are interested in attending. Schools will take applicants with any degree, as long as you have the pre-reqs. All of the majors you listed would be a great background, go for what interests you the most. You will learn what you need to be an OT in grad school. I graduated with a bachelor of arts in sociology, discovered OT a couple years after college, and got into the top OT program in the U.S. I recently graduated and landed a fantastic job. So, I wouldn't stress about which major to pick too much...you will be happier and do better if you enjoy what you are learning. Keep at it! You are preparing for the best career in the world!!!

Denise Said:

How broad are the career differences between occupational therapy and exercise physiology?

We Answered:

Well, as someone who is a healthcare provider I am not going into the differences between the actual job activities (although there are many....they are not alike) I'll let someone else tell you that. What I can tell you is that if I had to choose on the basis of job availability, and pay, and opportunity, and autonomy.....Occupational Therapists have it.
