Kathleen Said:

Will being an Iraq war vet be held against me for obtaining a visa with such a anti-Iraq war atitude in Europe?

We Answered:

Your EU visa is granted on you being able to undertake the purpose of your visit (study, temp work, etc) without needing support (welfare, etc) from your host country. No ideological questions are asked.

I understand work visas for the UK are very hard to get - I believe you already need to have employment lined up and your future employer needs to get involved somehow.

From the sounds of it, you might fit in nicely in New Zealand. English speaking country, a very pro-peace people, civil public discourse, big demand for medical professionals, good pay, high standard of living, better weather than the UK, gorgeous scenery..... Check it out!

Will being an Iraq-war vet be held against me for obtaining a visa with such a Anti-iraq war attitude in Europ?

We Answered:

People in Europe don't have issues with ordinary Americans, just foreign policy as it was pursued under Cheney & Bush, which was unnecessarily aggressive & self-serving. When visa applications are being considered politics are not, or at least should not, be taken into consideration.

What will be taken into consideration is whether or not you have a skill or a profession which is in demand, as far as I know Occupational Therapists are always in demand - don't take my word on that though have a look around the job websites & see what they're offering.

Your ancestry will mean very little unless you have an Irish grandmother through whom you can claim an Irish passport.

The only other English speaking country in Europe is the UK. You could also consider Australia & New Zealand.

You could also try the broadsheets, the Irish Times & Irish Independent in Ireland and the Guardian in the UK. There are also jobs in the private sector but in the public sector there is always seems to be a demand for certain professions.

How to work as a Special Education Teacher in Ireland?

We Answered:

Can you speak Irish? Irish is compulsory there both in primary and secondary schools there. That why British teachers can't work in Ireland due to not having the Irish language. But Irish teachers can work in the UK since the Irish can speak English.

A lot of Europeans do not support the war in Iraq - as do a lot of Americans. This does not mean this will be held against you personally. If I were French, would I be denied a visa to the US because the French government opposes the Iraq war?
Don't worry. Most Europeans still like Americans.

You may be disappointed about the morals, the economy, politics and attitude in Europe. It is not that much different from the US. I would agree though that political correctness is typically American. In most Europeans countries it is tolerated if not admired to be politically incorrect.

Which country is best for you is hard to say. It really depends on your attitude to life. Speaking the language is a prerequisite, but you can probably get by with English the first couple of months until you have learned enough.

Will being an Iraq war vet be held against me in obtainingf a visa with such a anti-iraq war attitude in europ?

We Answered:

Any anti-Iraq war attitude is to do with Governments, politicians and the public being treated like idiots over fiascoes like WMD. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the soldiers of any country, so don't worry on that score.

THe UK immigration system is now points based, that is to day you need to accrue a set number of points to be eligible to apply for a visa.

As you have a Masters degree, you would be possibly eligible to apply for a Tier 1 Highly Skilled Worker visa.

In this category you must score 95 to be eligible. The points are based on the following:
-75 points for your attributes (age, qualifications, previous earnings, and experience in the UK); and
-10 points for English language; and
-10 points for available maintenance funds.

As you come from an English speaking country, you can claim the points for English language without sitting an exam.

You need to show that you have £2,800 in your bank account for at least three months before you apply.

The points awarded for the attributes are detaled on this link.

Ireland is very expensive compared to the UK and has very high unemployment. Ireland is having to make massive cuts in services and two of the cuts made earlier this year show just how bad things are there. They cut free medical cards for the over 70s and the cervical cancer immunisation programme for young girls.

Is your Irish descent from a grandparent born in Ireland? If it is you are eligible to claim Irish citizenship.

I think you need to spend some time in the UK or Ireland before deciding to move. We have many of the same problems as the US, although perhaps on a smaller scale. The economy is not brilliant here and political correctness drives us to distraction also.

You will find the UK and Ireland much more liberal minded than perhaps you are used to.
